AVOIDED IHE "LIMB OF FIRE " Prince Henry Is the Kaiser'* brother. This titled tar la In command of the German squadron which has been mousing around the Philippines ever since hostilities began and It Is gen erally believed that he would like to create a disturbance If he dared. He was at Hong Kong Just before Dewey started for Manila and a con versation between the two men has be come famous. Prince Henry laughing ly remarked that he was going over to watch our commodore shoot Manila In to doll-rags, whereupon Dewey, with the same suavity and the same tone of significance, warned his highness to "keep out of the line of are.’* ’ Ho did. But the restless representative of the egotistic emperor la still a victim of that fired feeling. He wanted to know Just how far he could go without danger of being Dewoy ixed and evidently ho has found out. The cables brought an amusing ac count of Tils conduct. The Insurgents had seized a Spanish merchant vessel and, converting It In to n transport, were preparing to at tack the chief defense of Sublg bay. which was . till held by the Spanish. The little pouter pigeon of the seas, with his Teutonic ships, puffed himself up to the point of Interfering The In surgents eatd nothing, but they knew who held the trumps, so they quietly went over to the Olympia and Informed Dewey of what had happened. The admiral, who was probably reading the account of the first of May. written by the 90th man who was with him on the bridge, looked up from the newspaper long enough to say that if the Concord and the Raleigh had fin ished breakfast, they might go up to Sublg bay and attend to that little matter in band. iH fjgrf 4444.. WHY HOT AHOIHBR PARK 1 What disposition U to lie made of the old settling basin when the new water works are completed? A large area of land will be thrown upon the etty for which there Is no Imperative need, and yet It should be utilised to the best possible advantage. Tbe city here has an opportunity of beautifying and Improving a section for which practi cally nothing has been done and thou sands of people whose wants and wish es are but 100 rarely considered will be benefited beyond measure. They will be made to feel that Intelligent consideration ii directed towards their condition and that they are to be given every facility for mural and physical health. There are approximately twenty-five acres In the basin. Levelled and con verted Into building lot?, It would not bring more than SI2OO per acre, an ag gregate of $30,000. The city should be enthusiastically glad of an opportunity to secure a park at such a price. It Would be cheap, considered In the light of tbe benefits accruing from it, at SIOO,OOO. And yet it may be furnish ed without any other expenditure than tor the levelling and landscape garden ing. Located as It Is, with the canal on one side and a leading thoroughfare on the other, It could be made one of the moat beautiful parks in the state of Georgia. It would be an oasis in that community of tedium atd toil.
