Mr. Spalding apeka In support of th*

"As a result." be said, "this ha* re
sulted in the practice of several men
getting together and running for one
i of there officer, and dividing the fee*.
| It would be fair and right for the Leg
islature to pass a law making a reason,
able compensation for the officers, so
that the officers of every county should
receive equitable amounts. 1 believe
that If this Is not regulated by the Leg
islature very noon and fixed while the
ball Is In motion, the question Is being
agitated. It will result In something
worse for these official*. I do uot be
a
lleve In a niggardly amount being
named, but let fair and Just compensa
tion be paid. Let a system of books be
kept and returns made and the salar

Blehmond county Is heartily in favor
of It. The Legislature will. In fact, be
sustained by the whole state if It wipes
out the unjust and unequal system of
fee® for county officers and Instead
gives them all o fair and equitable
salary. The abuses of the present
plan are notorious. It Is practically
Impossible, In the first place, to find
out what ts tto compensation of all
the county officers. Furthermore, the
remuneration of the various officers Is
not fairly distributed.
The whole state has revolted against
the present plan. Now that this senti
ment has found expression through
such representative citizens as the
county commissions from all over the
state, In convention assembled, and
their wishes are to be transmitted to
the state Legislature, is seems that the
reform so long desired is at last In
sight and that the taxpayers are to
find relief.
The public did not realize how good
