of Ihe race Wholly apart from the

thought to be traceable In the largo

generative Influences to he considered,
more directly connected with munici
pal centralization. What, for exam
ple. is the effet of the street railway
and the blrycle? The street railway
tempts people to rifle when they ought
to walk. Factory hands, clerks, busi
ness men and others ride more gener
ally to their work than ever before,
enenfl the whole flay In stuffy Indoor
quarters, and ride home. Others use
the bicycle where they would other
wise walk, and the swift bicycle, not
only keeps them to a less extent in the
open air. but exercises only a part of
the muscular system which Is
strengthened and improved by walk

Here are two possible causes of a
certain fatty degeneration which
breeds weaknesses in vital organs and
troubles of tho heart, the kidneys and
the liver. Quite possibly. Evolution
ists tell us that the highly civilized
man is the more perfect in physique
because he uses his legs more than
the lower orders of the human race.
The ape has a small leg since he trav
els largely on all fours. The Hotten
tot stands on unsightly spindles be
cause he is indolent and exerts himself
little in getting a living. Generally
speaking, the great mass of the bar
barous and sr nil-barbarous races who
are now confined lijwgely to the tropi
cal belt are physically deformed and
defective for the same reason. What
will be the effect, then, upon the
more highly developed races, of th ; s
growing disuse of the lower muscular
