WASIIINQTON, WILKES. Abe Butler Killed by James Jackson, Jr.—Gther Hatters. Washington. Ga., July 29. —Last Sat urday evening a a the excursion train from Atlanta was coming In. a fatal j Bbcotlng affray took place at the depot, which retM'lted in the killing of Abe But! r, it young negro, by Joint's Jack- Ron. H- was abusing and lean ing a title white boy. when young Jackson eame up and onV-r d lilm to leave. Afterward, meeting him again at the depot, the trouble was renewed, and Jackson was knocked down by the negro, reviving a severe cut on the bead. Rising immediately Jaeksou drew his pistol and fired three shots et his assailant. Two of them took ef fect and the negro staggered down the 'steps, fell and died within five minutes of the time he was shot. The coroner’s jury, immediately impaneled, brought in a verdict of ‘'justifiable homicide,” and the young man >vas acquitted. The negro, Bill Richards, who killed L.-wis Lundberg, a young Swede living near here, has never been captured. It Is hoped that the governor will offer a reward for him. Several week* ago the Oambrll! manufacturing com pany secured tee couiract to supply the army with thirty thousand barrels of flour. The contract specified that the flour was to grade "strictly fami ly” and to he delivered at any pin e designated by Ibe government. Only about 25 per cent of the amount con tracted for has been taken by the gov ernment. The full amount required by the terms of the contract Is on hand and the government has been repeated ly notified of this fact, although It has not signified Its Intention to take It. Indeed the Gambrlll manufacturing company has learned that the govern ment does not Intend to take any more of the flour. No explanation of the government's action has been offered. The flour is more than two dollars a band cheaper than It was when the com rant was placed. Wheat was selling at *1 a bushel then, and if the company had bought wheat at the ruling prire at that time, the company would have sustained heavy loss. The company furnished the navy wilh five thousand barrels before the army order was placed and the flour was protiuonced to be up to the requirements. To the Editor or The H-rald: Sir Having read the article In your edition of yesterday concerning the treatment received by my father while In the city hospital, I would like to state fa'ts concerning the same. On Thursday las-.. 21st, on the advice Cf Ills physi cian. my father went to the hospital for treaiment. On Sunday while atten ding to him, the negro orderly delib erately poured strong carbolic acid on the led to such an extent aa to run all down the hack of the right leg and some on the left and also on the hips. My father lay in this condition until Tuesday last, when he was sent home heeaiise he’pleaded lo be sent, and we got another physician to attend him. J have seen tbe hosriital authorities and ttiey give me no satisfaction what ever. They say my father was given a hath Tuesday morning before he was sent home. If so, why was not the con dition of his burns inquired into? But he lay In the dreadful condition from Sunday until Tuesday without having a single tiling done for him. Tt seems to me some redress ottgiii lo he had for such treatment.
