They are rather shaky anil somewhat
Primitive in construction, but they are
comparatively comfortable. They make

i with him on his famous voyage around
Asia, makes one or two trips each sum
imer from Kakutsk to the Volar sea.

During th-maands of centuries the mag
nificent river has cut Its chanue
■through the mountains, which, covered
j with dark .virgin fores, of Siberian
spruce, tower upon each sld,, w hue
(lovely little islands, clad in IW
'verdure of spring, are mirrored in the
many channels which seclude them
from the steep and wild looking shores.
On those islands, the natives—Buriates
land Yakutes have pitched .heir tents.
I while their cattle are contentedly fee:,-
; ing on the fresh and delicate grass of
1 the early spring. The contrast between
'these idyllic scefiea and the dark virgin
Stretching oway for hundreds and even
I thousands of miles, teeming with hears,
'elks, wolves, etc., produce a sensation,
