Corporal Mills condition lh!a morn
tug was considered quite serious. Au
effort had been made to locale the bul
let by probes, but this foiled and the
last report of Surgem Fuqua to Col.
Jones waa that hla patient was In a
critical condition.
A curious feature of the affair Is as
follows:
Taylor was brought from the guard
house to the colonel's tent this morn
ing. handcuffed and under guard and
acknowledged being the man who sh it
Mills.
Taylor's Statement.
He also made the statement that he
hit tbe man he was aiming at and in
tended to shoot. As Mills was shot in
Che back, and the quarrel was between
MrCanu and Taylor there seems to be
something peculiar about this state
ment. When Taylor was brought In
this morning he complained that the
handcuffs cut Into hts wrists and re
quested that they be loosened.
001. Jones felt of them, ordered that
they be enlarged a notch and then sat.
iefled himself that the prisoner could
not work them off.
Taylor Is a coal black boy apparently
about 21 or 22 years old, quite mild
and Inoffensive looking.
He handed over the pistol, which he
has probably had since tbe last visit of
the paymaster.
The Penally.
In the event of Mills' recovering, Jhe
penalty for the act is the same in the
military In time of peace, as It would
be under the civil or state laws where
the offense was committed.
If Mills dies the penalty will be such
as the court martial may direct.
’ Queer Statement
Corporal McConn says be Is positive
that Taylor waa shooting at him, while
the prisoner Taylor says lie was not;
but hit the man he Intended to.
Whether this is a justification of his
(Taylor's) marksmanship or for some
other reason, cannot be told.
