f It as in lust exactly this mood of
.restful appreciation that a small i»arty
of music lovers met recently at the i
home of one of Augusta's heat known
singers for an evening of mutual enter
' talnment. and It la safe to say that
none of th • concerts of last winter
.was more keenly enjoyed than wa* the
.Informal and Impmmptu one of Friday
j evening.
I Miss Benson played several beautiful
'selections <>n her violin. She has Im
proved almost magically within the
past two years. Her long months of
study under the best teachers New
I York affords tell In the Increased
breadth of lone, flawless phrasing nnd
! exquisite delleary of touch. Miss Ben
son talked entertainingly of her concert
| experleneea of last winter, and aome-
I thing of her plans for the coming aea
| sen. Hhe will tour with the Metropoli
tan Concert eornpany. probably for six
months, beginning with the New Eng
| l.in*l state*, and going an far aa Texas.
Mias Benann hopes they will come to
[Georgia. Hhe do** not think Augus
iana appreciate amateurs, and Is anx
ious to ace what reception would be ac
corded her as a professional. She
would unquestionably play before a
large audience here, for Augusta has
every cause to be proud of this enter
prising and talented young woman.
[ Mrs. Willet sang delightfully a love
| song, sang It with that marvelous In
terpretation of the composer'* meaning
for which she Is so Justly famed. Then
[she told interestingly of the dlseo'very
[that "O Promise Me” was similar to
• a French melody published years be
-1 fore. This led to a discussion by the
I small circle as to whether or not all
1 seeming plagiarism jwas In reality a
|conscious theft, or rather the result of
i certain thought waves which make
persons of sympathetic temperament
think along similar lines, even though
’they had no actual mental contact with
!each other.
| Prof. Wlegnnd, by request, played his
Hans Soucl Gavotte, following It by the
j-composition of a certain young musi
cian, written seven years after the
wmk of the professor was published
and so exactly like the latter that hut
eric obvious conclusion could lit- drawn.
Prof. Wlegand also v. as Induced to
play a new march which he has Just
placed in the hands of a prominent
publishing firm, and which promises to
he the most popular two-step of the
| coming season.
Mr. Battle is a welcome addition to
Augusta's musical circles. He Is pleas
ingly remembered by many as a mem
ber of the Schubert Quartette that ap
peared here several seasons ago. He
has given great pleasure with his solos
at several of the churches since his re
cent arrival in the city, but there were
several present the other evening who
beard him for the first time. He has a
clear, lyric tenor, and seems to prefer
songs Of one certain character, ryth
mic. swinging melodies with flowing ac
companiment*. a style always popular
with genuine music lovers. His selec
tions were all heartily applauded.
The never to lie forgotten musical
evening ended charmingly with ices
and sweets and much conversation.

The Passing of Sum me r
The August days are slipping away
the reports of glorious weather. Year
by year the fact Ih demonstrated that
in August the best times are enjoyed.
July for several seasons has been fill
ed v.ith storms and uncertain weather.
This year dog days seemed to have
transferred their moist unpleasantness
to early July. But In August things
are settled. One has decided which of
her summer gowns Is most becoming,
and the tendency to "save” them has
departed. The newness is off and tlv
period'of genuine comfort has set in.
The sense of tbp approaching close of
holiday time gfves an added Value to
each day. and one takes the summer
delights in sloW'sips.
