It was seven o'clock when the Hough Rider* entered the village of All area. After a ahorl halt, they began the long climb up,the steep, narrow trail, which affords the only passage to Mount Orand Mewa. which shuts the elty of Ranllago from the *eo. By thla time the Mat of the sun wa* beginning to; t># felt keenly by the men. Laden with full marching equipment, they tolled alowly up the rocky path lu sin gle file. A dosen mules carried the reserve am munition and hospital supplies. The beasts were affected by the heat also. Despite those obstacles, the toilsome ascent finally was made, and a re freshing sea breeae brought some tri fling surcease. Before the Rough Riders alretched for nine miles a com paratively level plmeati half n mile in width, dotted with chaparral thickets, and frequently broken by small va vinca. At the other extremity rose the bat tlements of ancient Mcrro, situated high on a point commanding Santiago Bay. The mesa is. traversed about onr-tird of its length by Juraguaslto creek, a narrow, lazy stream, which 1a spanned at the village of Joraguaalto by a railroad bridge, over which Den oral Shatter hopes to send his heavy artillery. The view from the hilltop was a Bplendld one. as General Lawton's col umns alowly wound their way along, preceded by the skirmish line to pre vent a surprise. The mules were dragging the mountain battery along after the Twelfth infantry. A dyna mite siege gun had been carried by a detail of Rough Riders as far as the village of Juragtta. where the men were reeling. The Tenth cavalry had dismounted and were climbing the mesa from Altares. The Seventy-First New York had Just landed and were falling in preparatory to beginning the same ascent. Men soon began to fall out of the ranks and drop exhausted tinder the shede of any convenient brush. Col. Wood sent an orderly to ask for reioforee ments. He met the Tenth Cavalry, which rurrtedly moved forward, as did the Twenty-gecond Infantry. Casting aside their baggage, men who had a few momenta before been lying exhausted on the ground sprang to tbclr feet, grasped their rifles, and staggered forward to the aid of their comrades. By ten o'clock the enemy hod been cheeked, with the assistance of the Tenth nnd Twenty-sscfmd. 'Hie lighting on the mesa continued furi ously for an hour In the burning sun. The men had no water In their can teens, and the throatß of the officers became ao parched f at they could only whisper their commands. Rifles became almost too hot to hold. Many men took ofT their canteens to give -the dearly prized water to their wounded nnd exhausted companions. The mules that wore carrying ammu nition fell exhausted and could not rise. General Wheeler, who was In Al tares when the fight began, hastened to the front, and soon was in the (hick of the engagement. His ap pearance greatly enrouraged both of ficers and men. who pressed forward with spelt vtgor that the enemy be gan to yield. Tbls retrograde move ment. once begun, carried the fighting slowly back over the ground to the point at which It had started. The fight near Sevilla began at 8 o'clock this morning and lasted four hours. The struggle was most des perate during the first hour. Up to nine o'clock the Spaniard*, who be gan the attack, tenaciously held their ground.
