There are quite three Ibotiaand Inhabi
tants, and as far as I am able to judge
I'found them kind and mindful lo en. j
tertain stranger*. Several times I
rode over the pretty place with a
dear friend, enjoying tbe company, the
scenery and the swift speeding of tbe
fine bay horses, as we moved easily
over the sandy roads. And. breathing
the fresh, sweet air. I forgot tbe spell
of grip in May and the weary days of
convalescence.
I attended several house parties
those informal gatherings where
friends meet and remember the pleas
ure long afterwards. At Col. Mattox's
country place I met several interesting
people, among them Judge Sam
Lumpkin and his lovely wife. The
judge is every Inch the judge, and his
lady, so sweet and winsome, will not
be forgotten.
Mrs. Mattox entertains charmingly
and Col. Mattox gives of his best to
his friends. The women convicts
work on Col. Mattox’s plantation. Old
Mre. Nobles was there. She look*
very much like an Indian squaw—hard
and tough but when someone read
to her a letter from her daughter,
tears gathered in her cold gray eyes,
and trickled down her sallow cheeks.
I saw the convict blacksmith. A tall,
straight young woman of light copper
color, dressed in shirt and trousers,
for convenience. She was holding
the bridle of a strong gray horse when
my attention was called to her. “A wo
man.” I said, in astonishment. “Yes."

—exposing sturdy legs and well shaped
feet —and the shirt sleeves pulled up
to the elbows left bare the finest arms
