New York. Sept. B.—Gen. Miles was
asked today what he thought of the
pub'.tfhed reports that it was believed
in Washington that the present pub
lic discussion of army ofTnlra will he
dropped after his expected Interview
with President McKinley. He said: “I
decline to be led Into a dlecualson of
the matter.”
Gen. Miles went shopping with his
wife and daughter. Before leaving the
Waldorf-Astoria he said: "I leave for
Washington at noon today. 1 shall im
mediately enter the ‘tread mill." mean
ing my official duties. I shall call at
the war department first and pay my
respects and shall then go at once to
the President's mansion to pay my re
spects to Major McKinley."
Gen. Miles has corroborated the ac
curacy of the Western papers' Inter,
view with him. taking Corbin and Al
ger severely to task.

A horse ran away on the Sandbar fer
ry road early this morning. The negro
riding Mm was thrown, but not injured,
and as he walked on tound his horse
peacefully eating grass by the road
side.
CRETAN AFFAIRS.
The Demand That Is Made on the
Admirals.
Canea. Sept. 8 The President of the
Cretan exeaullvo. has notified the for
eign admirals that. In view of the mas
sacres at Candla. it Is impossible to
continue the effort to organize an ad
ministration until the Turkish function
aries and troops are withdrawn. He
demands the convocation of the Cretan
assembly and proposes to place a force
of Cretans at the disposal of the inter
national administration.

San Francisco, Cal.. Sept. 8. —Private
J. C. Taylor. Co. M, First Tennessee
regiment, recently tried by court-mar
tial for conduct prejudicial to good or
der and mllitnry discipline, was found
guilty and sentenced to twenty days at
hard labor and the forgeit of five dol
lars of his pay. The offsno was
“talking back” to an officer.
Ordered to Lexlngtor.
St. Louts, Mo., Sept. B.—Col. Good
win. commanding ilia Seventh volun
teers (immunes) lias received orders to
move Ids regiment to Lexington, Kv.,
at the earliest time convenient. The
Third United States volunteers has al
so been ordered to the same place.

SUIT AGAINST GEORGIA.
Mrs. Edward Straus, Represented By
Attorney Ladson, Sues Road.
The case of Mrs. Rdward Strauss vs.
the Georgia Railroad company comes
to trial today at Madison. Ga.
Mrs. fftrausg lives In Augusta. Last
June, her husband. Mr. Kdward
Strauss, who was a fireman for the
above road, was injured at Rutledge
by un apron of the large coat chute at
that place falling on him. He subse
quently died of his Injuries.
Mr. tttraims brought suit against the
road through her attorney, Mr. Ladson,
of Atlanta.
Mr. Bryan Cummtng is representing
the road. Mrs. Htrauss left for Madi
son this morning. The accident to Mr.
Strauss happened In a similar manner
to the way Mr. Charlie Wilson was
hurt at the sami place, while firing on
a Georgia engine last winter.
DIED THIS MORNING.
firs. Carrie Helen O’Neill Passed
Away at an Early Hour.
Mrs. Carrie Helen O’Neill, residing In
Battle Row, died at 3:30 o’clock this
morning from typhoid,fever.
Miss O’Neill had bee* sick about sev
en days with the disease. Phe was IS
years of age.
The funeral service*will be conduct
ed by Rev. Charles Wilkinson at 9
o'clock tomorrow morning. The inter
ment will occur in Watkins cemetery,
Summerville.

THE BODIES FOUND.
Young Wheeler'# Remain* Secured.
There Men Were Drowned.
Monlauk Point. I- 1., Sept. B. —The

Wheeler, son of MsJ Geo. Joeeph
Wheeler, and of Second LleuL Newton
n. Mtkpatrick. First cavalry, who
were drowned while bathing at sea yes
terday, came In with the tide and weie
thrown on the beach about 2 o'clock
this morning.
The bodies were found lying close
together Just below the life saving sta
tion. tl»out a quarter of a mite from
where the young men had gone tn
bat hint.
A detail of sixty men from the Sec
ond cavalry had been patrolling the
bench with lanterns. Life an vers who
knew the const had predicted that the
bodies wculd drltt In where they did.
Two rude biers were formed out of
p'.anks taken from near the life sav
ing station and the bodies were placeJ
upon them. Meantime the cavalrymen
hnd gathered up and down the beach
and followed the bodies to Gen. Wheel
er's headquarters.
With Gen. Wheeler were three of his
daughters, who ate In camp nursing
the sick.
The uniform of an Infantry private
with slices,, hat and underwear, was
found ou the beach this morning a
few hundred yards to the westward
where Cadet Wheeler and Lieut. Kirk
patrick were drowned. It is Inferred
that a third man was drowned last
night.
The name Is on the inside band of
the trousers, but is illegible,

How the Savannah Brought Wood to
Farmer.
One of the farmers below here re
ports quite a peculiar fact. Just before
the flood he cut a great deal of swamp
wood. When the flood came, of course,
it went, but the river kindly placed
somebody’s wood on bis place, so be
came out even.

joint conference of the inmrnitee of the
three parties Democratic. Populist ,

Order to That Effect Given In Senator
Bacon’s Presence.
Special to The Herald.
Atlanta. Ga., Sept B.—The Atlanta
Journal has a special from Washington
saving that President MeKliney has in
structed Gen. Corbin to order that two
of the Georgia regiments be mustered
out of service at once.
This was done in the presence of
Senator Bacon. President McKinley
asked Senator Bacon to name the two
regiments, but the senator declined to
do so. This duty will now devolve up
-041 Governor Atkinson.
Col. Ray's regiment of immunes has
been credited to Georgia as a regula
tion volunteer regiment.
Though Vienna is constantly growing,
the consumption of meat, owing to the
growing number of poor families, has
steadily * decreased during the last six
years. _

With the demolition of Mayas prison
in Paris, the first prison in France con
structed on the cellular system has dis
appeared. There were 1.200 cells, radi
ating like the spokes of a wheel and so
arranged that each prisoner could see
the chapel from his door and listen to
divine service without leaving his cell.
