NEW YEAR. 56<w,
tM Ik* Jew ish Calendar. Begins Next
Friday.
Tk* Jewish New Ysar 5059. which Is
moveable feast, will commence next
Friday rveninn. Sept it. Tb# holiday
com**' ten days* this senaots
than last year. It is one of the great
**t and most Important feasts In the
calendar of th# Hebrew creed end will
be g«n#«wlly observed by the Israelite*
of tbls city.
The orthodox J*ws observe two days.
WUb the rising of the first rtar nrxf
Friday evening tb* feast will b*g!n
And will continue for 21 hoars. This s
a feast of modi rejoicing and Is ob.
served with reremeny snd jubilation
among the Hebrew*. The Hebrew
name of the feast Is Rosh Hoahanah.
Tht season of Rosb Hoshanah. or re
joicing . will last uutij the advent of
Yom Klppur. or the day of arooem. at,
which follow* ten day* later. Yom
Kipfiur Is Ji.st the opposite of Rosh
Hosanah. being a time of fasting and
penance. The Tasting of Yom Kippur
is of 24 hour*' durations. In which t'me
an orthodox Hebrew will not taste food
or drink. The fast begin* In the ev
ening and runtioue* throughout the
succeeding day. The services to be
conducted In the synagogue will be
very elaborate. Moot of the ceremonies
will be conducted In significant
of the fact that the season was a Joy
on* one.
The New Year will be ushered In by
the blowing of the shofar. accompanied
by other musical Instruments. The or
der of service is of n ritualistic char
acter, the union ritual being used In
the reformed Irmules and the old ritual
in the orthodox syne.gttgues. No one
part of the service is exalted at the ex
pense of another, so the Bermon and
the ritual are supposed, to counter
balance each other in value. The
unique thing at the New Year service
is the blowing of the shofar. The sho
far is a trumpet made of a ram's horn,
and its use Is Lite signal for the people
to scan the past by a quickened con
science, asking for the pardoning of the
sins committed, followed by a thought
ful consideration of the future year,
with a prayer that. It may be fruitful
of good to the individual. The hear
tiness and sincerity with which this
part of the service is entered into de
termines in a large degree, Its value to
the Individual.
