In her uptodate costume of pure white pique, with Its broad white sailor col lar. adorned with silver stars at each corner, and her tie and belt, showing the silken red, white- and blue of our national colors. Dorothy looked as fair as the morn ing itself, as she turned on the worn old threshold, and looked wistfully out over tin- wide expanse of shadow fleck ed green, on past the old fort, to the blue, blue river, dancing In the morn ing brec-se. A presentiment came to her, white hes itating there, that something was to happen—what, she. of course, could not tell; a few merry calls from her party who were already Inside caused her to turn suddenly and enter the low old fashioned doorway. The tiny dark entrance was fitted up with a few very old-fashioned splint bottomed chairs, quaintly low as to seat and awkwardly high as to back, while from the rounds of one chair-back hung an antique candlestick calculated to drive any curio-hunter wild with envy. The candlestick had been evidently us ed In days gone by for the purpose of giving light to any one who chose to sit and read at night Ip the chair. Dor othy examined this primitive relje cu riously and then turned to a battered and Shaky old desk, on which reposed a great book, filled with hundred? of names .visitors to the same old house. A rud* red-rooted cradle made all of w<s>d on wooden rockers, won the girl's admiration, for she was devotion Ita ielf to her elder sister's chlldr«n. An |«nclent si Inning wheel captured her roving fancy for a moment. Then the glenm of the sapphire sky, with the ; waving green of nn elm tree eilhouet , ted against It, drew her over to the I small dlsmottd-paned window. "I wouM a great deal rather be out side,” she said to herself; and ran down stairs again. Hastening through the library, In order to avoid her frlonda. who were then In the front room—going Into fashionable ecatarles over the old sptnnet—Dorothy passed Into a low. uncalled kitchen, filled with old time flowing blue ware, pewter dishes, and an old fashioned fireplace, with h large brick hake oven at one side. She was Idly examining the crane on which hung a huge copper soup kittle, when she heard a well known voice. She listened Intently. Yes, It was certainly his. With a gesture of defiance she sprang to the nearest door. Alas! on it in big black letters, were the words, "Positively no admittance." She wav ered for a moment; then as the sound of that voice drew nearer. Dorothy de liberately opened the door, sprang through and closed It behind her, A little plump matron, sitting In the cnxlly furnished, but modern looking, room which the girl had Invaded, rose to her feet In astonishment as the un lexpected apparition confronted her. I "t beg your pardon," said Dorothy, courteously-, '*l—d' —ran m here to avoid certain people In the other room. Will you kindly allow me to pass through into the garden?” The winning young voice had the desired effect, and the cottage keep 'er’s wife gave her gracious consent. ! It seemed restful, cool nnd fragrant j outside, ns Dorothy sat down under n great ash tree, with burning cheeks, 'holding the plump little matron's baby In her lap. which she had found crow ing ami kicking on the soft green sward outside. The baby was prettty, very pretty, with big wondering, black j eyes and Jetty silken ringlets all over ; his little head: he affiliated with the ■girl nt once —all children did. Dorothy was busily engaged In slipping a beau ; tlful gold bracelet from her own snow ; white wrist up ajid down the child's dimpled arm. when that miserable ! Smith found her. Somehow there was a dreadful look (of complete satisfaction on his face, as he bowed low- before her, and the fair Dorothy, noticing It. rebelled at once. “You seem to have the Rift of mak ing yourself invisible at times," was THE -A.T7QTTBT-A.
