A Sad Tragedy Occurs Off Hilton Head. Beaufort, Sept. 16. Capt. Henry Von Marten, an old resident of Beau fort. owner of a boat called “Our Frits," and an experienced sailor In these waters, accompanied by Capt. Ichahod Wiley, master of the Nelson Bartlett, one of the wrecked schooners on Hilton Head Beach In the late storm, and a negro named Hamilton Hojtu. started out from Beaufort to visit the wreck of the sehoouer on bus iness. For some cause they gibed their sails while they were sailing before the wind, and In doing so the boat, ballas ted with some erptent and bars of Iron, capslxed and went down. They disappeared and have not been seen or henrd of since. Men from the shore [saw the sinking of the boat and all on [board, and the men on the mall boat, some distance behind beheld the dis aster. and knew the boat and her crew, and within a half hour after boats from shore were around to see If the unfortunate men could be picked up. Neither bodtes nor boat has since been seen or recovered. Parties are out en deavoring to get some trace, but so far j have been unsuccessful. They were no doubt lost. The wind at the time was blowing quite fresh and the place of the mel ancholy disaster was about a mile aud a half from the Hilton Head shore, an exceedingly perilous spot with the wind in the direction from which it j blew. FIRE AT OXFORD. A Grocery Store and Negro Dwelling Burned Down. Oxford. Ga.. Sept. 16. The claislc city of Oxford was visited by fire at the early hour of three o’clock Wed nesday. One store which was occu pied by a stock of groceries, owned by Mr. E. W. Huson of Covington. Ga.. and a two room dwelling house which was inhabited by a colored family, wore completely demolished. The houses were the property of Mr. V. T. Stephens, the tewu marshal, and were not insured. When the burning build ings were reached the fire had gain ed such headway ns to make it impos sible to be stopped, the flames having completely enwrapped the building. The fire occurring at such an unusual hour there were few people present, and those who came fond tt about all they could do to save the furniture belonging to the colored family. A light insurance was carried upon the stock and the loss in other directions will hardly exceed one thousand dol lars. Another and smaller building ad joining the store was saved by good work and a favorable wind. Mr. Hu son had not been in business long, having opened up only a few woks ago. Quite a number of opinions have been advanced as to the cause of the fire. Some think is was the work of an incendiary.
