Ho that from thla nupply, of which hla in formation ie lllnalratlve rather than credible, hi many respects there ia on ly a little of elective substance. There Is a darker background to the existence of these societies, and tbelr acta prove that which .» Indicated In the fictional sources of information Just now suggested. They belong to loccntestlbl? history of weil-rem -mber ed facta. In thla scene moves the som bre figure of the Cgar Of Russia, as sassinated on the public street, end the strange Incidents which give the mur der of President Carnet, etabbed In the heart in hl» YlgilanUy-guard»d car rlage, on the streets of D'-ons. where he v/os a civic guest, its tragic emi nence. In these cases the murderei made s trade of life, end gave his own as readily as he had taken so ruth lessly the one which made his forfeit. Besides that are all the several at tempts, some of them futile, all of them desperate in purpose and failing in ex ecution. But taking up this murder as bav tng regard to the Nihilistic sreietiei ■there are many things (hat sho<v that the Empress eould not have been in cluded in a program of assassination. There is a suggestive line in the dis patches which says that Lucculnl—or whatever may be his name—has said that he came to assassinate in Geneva the Duke of Orleans; that he had been charged with cowardice when selected for the errand; that failing to meet his victim he sought another that would vindicate his own courage, and then struck home. If we look for other purpoes we may look long and in vain. Here was a man to whom failure in the execution of his errand meant, if we may believe anything of the stories of the awful societies of which he is a confessed member, a certain death without the abnormal credit which even in the u I *.# % •#• ’■ t-r* t I * Otb f la#* < #* ###s4 (Mhi Hi *■§" - * tpflU Ml' • tJ*- AMtn i » atwMIWI had My Jed <b*>r e ->e>< pewwt In R. anla and *ar**» and gen’lenun ah we htgb m« i an** that .ntitrd personal wfiw* grew tb* letter tbey base ***** .■trunk I* attain th* former tbey b*** aim f» tailed, and when tbry tum to aanaraiantl-i*. nnd r«p»c;allr nrben tb*y mak< by Ini-'m en as Hi tbla rasa, or by other mean*, tbelr rlrUne women rv«yi tbo** who bear thetr inartirula* • (cry must recoil from (hem In horror SBinINTO YOUR SHOES AU ru( Pum-Ksw. n powder for the f* rt It rum painful, utitlrs. smart mg. r.rr* us feet and Instantly takes the sting out of coma and btinbrna lt'a tha arc si rat romfnrt discovery <>f th« ago. Sept. 16. —lt Is very p'.eaKant lu contcmp'.ate that amid all the depression caured by the low price of cotton all o*er the south there yet remain* one class of business men who are unaffected. Dumber is higher now than at any period for years. The demand for export wairtJever so good and the went and south arc ordering all that can Imj supplied by our southern mills. Yel low plr.e Is being more extensively used for building purpose* than ever before, and Is holding Us own when ever It once ge’s a foothold. A prom inent lumber dealer tn New York elly writes that no wood is so good for flooring as the Georgia yellow pine. The price of lumber has advanced one dollar and a half per thousand In the past week. The saw mills throughout this sec tion nrc all running on extra time to meet (his groat and unusual demand at advanced prices that lumber Is now bringing. Your corres|>ondeat could name dox-; ens of men in this i-ectlon who have; made fortunes at the lumber business in the lasi two ypars. The low price of cotton compels fr.rmers who are hard up to sell their crude limber thls> winter at prices the saw mill men offer them. The milling business was nevrT better than at the present and the outlook is Indeed bright in this line. Fifteen young ladles of boarded the northbound train yrster- : day for the different colleges. I was sorry to leave Venice, but, real ising the I rip before me, hastened ,on to Florence, passing, en route, the llttlo Italian elty, Bologna, of sausage fame. Florence. < ailed "Ihe city of flowers and [the flower of cites,'' Is somewhat disap pointing W me, so far as the city Itself is In question. The plare Is In dec adencs as al! evidence* show; the streets are narrow and unclean, while the Inhabi tants seem to be In dire poverty. Here we had occasion to observe the poverty of Italy more than elsewhere. It seems to be <a doubtful struggle for the poor, miserable wretches to live. Barefoot, scantily clad man and women may be Keen engag'd In the most degrading and severe labor, while on the counte nance of everyone despair and want are so rlearly depleted that people seem wandering phantoms. The elty Is not pretty at all. although there are several delightful drives in the imme diate neighborhood, and but for Its pai aees, museums and galleries of rare worth and importance, might be omit ted from our program. But Florence must be recognized on account of her exceptionally good works of art. Per haps the richest and most celebrated collection of statues and pictures of the world may he found in this city. Here Michael Angelo’s "David" and “Day and Night" are to he found: Raphael, Ru bens, Van Dyck. Guido Rejni and many other famous artists are represented by sublime expressions of what is best <n art.
