In this event we will have, cn a somewhat smaller scale, but one still large enough to worry Senator riatt. a situation precisely like that In the municipal campaign of a year ago. and It la thta attuatloo which !a the cause of all the Democratic hilarity— and the Democrats have troubles of their own. Just how much of this proposed In dependent movement will mean cannot yet be foretold, for It has hardly got a fair atart. It has not yet scoured the gracious approval of the City Club, nor has lta overtures to the national gold Democrats been answered. So far, however, as the governorship is con cerned, It Is safe to say that Its in dorsement or repudiation of Roosevelt, providing that he Is the candidate, will make so small difference that Is Isn't worth while to consider It. But It must be remembered that the governorship Is the least priae that Is Ueing played for this year. It Is the state ticket legislature and the United States sen atorshlp for which the bosses are striv ing, and the governorship with all its petronage is for once but a means to an end. Platt. Is playing the finest game of polities in all his career, and he Is playing It with the desperation of a man whose alt is at stake. He hit on Roosevelt, distasteful ns It must have been, as the man of men who could carry on his hack a Platt state ticket and carry Into Albany a Platt state leg islature, with the resulting Platt sen ator. Since, however, he began to play this game the situation has so changed that he has come to sec that not only must he make a fight for Platt, but for the Republicdu party, for the capture of the state ticket under the governor and of the legislature Is no longer a foregone conclusion.
