The fol lowing is the worn statement of Mrs. Florence Burns, taken before Jitstloe Williamson, of Emanuel county, as to the killing of Engineer Heslep: "Georgia. Emanuel county. Per sonally appeared before me Florence Burns, the wife of W. S. Bums, who on oath says the statement of her hus band made in regard to the killing of George Heslep Is a true statement. 1 further -wear the statement I made to the public at Sterling was not true. I made It onl" through fear, as I was In a strange country. "Floreneeßurns. “Sworn to and subscribed before me this the 16th day of September, 1898. “\V. M. Williamson, “N. F. & J. P. "Witnesses: F. B. Williamson and T. M, Murray.” This declaration was shown to Burns at the jail, and he simply remarked: “I have felt confident all the time that the truth would eoihe out sooner or la ter, Just as I stated tt at first," It Is thought this will go far towards clear ing the man charged with the killing. He has as counsel Hon. Thos. E. Wnt eon and Col. D. W. Krauss, two of the best lawyers of the state bar. and those who have believed In the Inno cence of the prisoner and have Inter ested themselves in his behalf feel con fident of his acquittal. This tnfromatlon was Imparted to the group of members doing the entertain ing but it was decided to keep It up until DeWolf Hopper arrived. Mean while the alleged was asked to favor the company with a song, hut he excused himself on the ground that he was a "little off color."
