Doss, who has served in the offl clal capacity of city treasurer of the city of Naahvllle since November the 14th. 1895, was yesterday morning sus pended by Mayor Dudley for Irregular ities In office, and because of the dis grace he brought upon himself and In fear of warrants to follow Mr. Dojs yesterday evening about six o'clock, at his home on South High street, at tempted suicide by shooting himself in the left breast. The news of an alleged shortage on the part of Treasurer Doss came to light yesterday morning about ten o'clock, and the report at once spread rapidly throughout the city. All sorts of rumors were set. afloat, some lo the effect that the defalcation would reach way up into the thous ands, and that the treasurer had left the city for unknown parts, with a large sum belonging to the city in his possession. These Bensal tonal stories, however, proved later to be a great exaggera tion, as so far as has been developed the peculation is only a few hundred dollars, and Mr. Doss Instead of flee ing from the city was at his home prostrated.
