THI 800 TB ABD TIT* CMT COTTOK The price of cotton at Augusta and other Southern point* has now de clined to five cents. Strangely enough, however, we hear much leaa complaint from the South than was the rase in 1894. when quotations were not quite so low and when It was fully predicted that flvc-cent cottosi meant the ruin of a great agricultural Industry. There is some repining, It Is true, but In the main the reporta we get from the South are that the flnaccial coudltlou of the planter* la better thnn perhaps was ever known before, and that busi ness ts flourishing, except lo those sec tions visited hy yellow fever. Such a stale of affairs is Inconsistent with the theory that flve-eeot cotton means the prostration of Southern agricultural Interests. The New ork Journal of Commerce has been at pain* to secure the views of leading bankers throughout the South tat this Important matter, taking the ground that the men who finance the crop ought to be Informed as to the effects of the low prices and the pros pects for the future. With this object In view the Journal addressed tetters to bankers in all the cotton states ask ing Iho following questions: "1. Does the preseut low price of cotton seriously threaten the prosper ity of the South? "2. Has there toon generally, or in spiclal sections, any reduction in the coat of raising cotton? If so, to what extent? ’ "S. Are there any other offf eti to low prices for cotton? ”4. Can any profit he tnade by the planter on live-rent cotton? i “5. Arc g*ncrsl business conditions the South sound and promising. f%m iiwu|i> <wi MM ***** MnmMMNmPp' Mr j «n*M *s i***# IW *f tMnif)* <MM * * mm «ttMMHM»MMMI Mt tMM' MmmMMHII *1 ■ MMWMMMMM •MM'MiMM MVWNhViIF ¥m ##PpM •MM MNwMaP'MNI m* **lpPM •Mnl ill MMM IM# y#r»gfci mMMHIMMI Mv IMm *|f %!- ««»#!
