were recently ordered by the war de
partment to visit the proposed sites for
winter camps in the South and to make
preprrations for the movements of vol
unteer troops thither, returned to
Washington Sunday and made « brief
visit to the War Department the neat
day. The other members of the mili
tary board appointed to visit the camp
sites are still In the Soutb. Gen. Young
reported to the department that satis
factory progress had been made with

the troops into winter quraters.

Mr. Mel Branch, of Harlem, Colum
bia county, who was once a leading
Populist in the Georgia Legislature
and who made himself famous several
yeare ago while out campaigning when
he advised the farmers ia one of hin
speeches "to raise less cotton and mdre
hell in politics," is at the De Soto to
day. Mr. Branch is not losing much

On one occasion her majesty instruc

from the country where she had been
hunting was especaiily stopped, and
the empress, leatiing out of the window,
exclaimed:
"Oh, Mr. George, I am so pleased you
