new comet. It «m flrat seen by Prof.
W. H Brook* of Oeneva. N. V.. on
Thursday of last week Prof. Friable
aay* that he has made three observa
tion*. and the comet la wonderfully
bright and moving with great velocity,
proving In hi* opinion that la unuaual
ly near the earth. "It appear* to he
a large, round body.” *aya the profes
sor, "and ha* moved over \ nine de
gree* In fonr days. It 1* going aonth

tinually. It was first seen about ten
degrees south of the principal *tar of
the constellation Draco, not far from
the second star of the Great Dipper.
It has moved steadily toward the cou
atelation of He.rculen, and I* now pass
ing through It. The comet la seen to
the he.at advantage Just after sundown
or iuat before sunrise," aa It Is theh
closer to the earth. It la fully throe
degrees In diameter and particularly
interesting on account of Its bright
ness and the great rapidity with which
It is moving through the heaven*.
From the present outlook of It* course,
it will probably be visible tn the naked
eye In a few days. The northern
heavens will then be brilliantly lighted
and the visible movement of the
comet will present a very startling ef
fect.”

Sir Thomas Upton, who challenged
for the America’s cup, has notified E.
A. Sumner, 145 Broadway, by cable
that he had forwarded a contribution
of'slo,ooo for use l« relieving the
needs of the sick and wounded aol
dlera. The money will be distributed
through the Empire State Society Sons
of the American Revolution.
When Sir Thomas was here last
June he expressed his heartfelt sympa
thy with the sick and wounded Ameri
cans, and eaid bo would he glad at
any time to relieve them. At a special
meeting of the Empire State Society
SI,OOO was appropriated fur the sick
and wounded soldiers, marines and
eail-rs. Sir Thomas was informed of
this action by cable, and the response
was the generous contribution.
