one with muddy wuter and one left

These were placed on a table In tne
little corn wigwam and each one was

three times, as the third time Is the
charm. If at the third trial you put
your hand into the clear water you
will marry a maid or bachelor, if Into
the muddy water a widow or widower;
if into the empty dish, saddest fate of
all, you will die unmarried.
The Swinging Apple
We next formed in a circle, anti to
the liveliest music danced round the
apple suspended from the centre of the
ceiling. The motion of the fiance
started the apple to swinging, and then
the first one to bite a piece from the
apple would be the first one to be mar

Then came the “looking glass spell.”
Each girl, one at a time, was given »

company must roll It up nnd spread It
thin and broad, arid each person must,
at some distnace from each other,
make the initials of her name with a

I The cake must then be set before the
fire, and each person must sit down in

We followed these directions exactly,

little hostess had put her initials nnd,
in a most Informal way, announced
their engagement.
The refreshments were then served
and they were as unique, In their way

There was the most delightful old
fashioned pumpkin bread, baked in lit
tle nones, steaming hot, with fresh
golden butter, in the centre; delicious
coffee, and little Individual fluted tarta
filled with pumpkin custard and a
rich meringue over the top, cottage
cheese, and fruits and nuts.
Indeed, it was a most beautiful cn

somebody may ;j bave just as good a

choose to duplicate It.

ear that the black* nearly everywhere
south of the Tennessee line today are

ment.
North Carolina has during the past
few years given ibe colored man room
liberty, but In the future he roust drop
again to the rear of the procession, or
run the risk of bring klukltixed 1u the
good old way. Rcpresantatlve John
Allen of Mississippi once convulsed
the south by a speech on the floor of
the house. Id reply to a bloody shirt
oration from some bitter republican
partisan from th* north, In which the
deplorable condition of the colored
people in Mississippi »'«« pictured.
Mr. Allen rcpllefl with mock indigna
tion to the charge that the white
democrats of Mississippi or any other
part of the south tortured the negroes
or conspired to prevent them from
exercising all the rights of free men.
lie admitted that the whites were or
ganized all over the state and that
they had firearms. He also acknowl
edged that they drilled and were ex
ceedingly active before every ©lection,
going about the country with much os
tentation, firing volleys near colored
.settlements, and otherwise making a
great hubbub. This practice, lie In
sisted. was not for the purpose of in
timidating the uegrocs, but to cull
their attention to the fact that an
election was at hand, and to remind
them of the duty they owed to their
country to go to the polls. He re
gretted that the demonstrations were
misunderstood by the* colored brethren
and that so few of them took the trou
ble to vote in spite of the disinteres
ted efforts of the white men to Jog
their memories. Ho found consolation,
however, in the fact that the fault
was the black man's and not the
white man's. The white man had
done all that was necessary to elevate
the black mau, and If the black man
did not respond the whites could not
be held to account for the omission.
Something or the kind which was
thus satirized by Mr. Allen seems now
to be going on in the state of North
Carolina.
The lesson once learned by the ne
groes of Mississippi as to their lack
of civil rights has never been forgot
ten; and when the time was ripe the
south had no trouble whatever In
nailing fast the victory thus gained,
by the adoption or a white man's con
stitution. This instrument, which
practically disfranchises flic 'W-ilwed
element of the state's population,
lias been upheld by the Supreme
Court of the United States, on the
ground that it does not discriminate
