British hark Alfon Alaw. Capt. Thom
as, which arrived today from Swansea,
reports meeting wflth immense ice floes
w hile rounding Cape Hern. <>n Septem
ber 12. In latitude f.» degiees, south, th*'
watch on the topgallant yard reported
Icebergs ahead. The vessel was hem
tped In for nearly thte- days. At mid
night on the 12lh (i blizzard cant ■ dow n
| on the ship. It was Imposslhl? to make
sail, as all the rones and tackle, deck,
masts and yard* w ere sheeted with Ice.

over a foot thick.
The ice doe was not thick and did no
damage to the vessel. On September 11
the lie had disappeared, and no more
was seen, although th ■ vessel stood to
Oo degrees south. The skipper said lie
had made twenty-four voyages west

sails and ropes so frozen that the vards
