The trial lasted foj quite a while, but in the end brought In the verdict, "The court being o. the opinion that there was no criminality, does therefore ac quit him.” Captain Smythc was restored to his company and saw active service and did good work before the end of the war, coming here in 1865, and has been a much loved and respected citizen since. The incidents of the courtmartial had escaped the memory of Gen. Go bin. but when shown the original pa pers by Captain Smythe he recalled the full details of the episode, and says he remembers well bow glad the officers were that tbe captain was acquitted. Capt. Smythe justly cherishes the original papers that tell of his noble and honorable stand, and the age wrm papers have an honored place among his cherished valuables. Neb., Dec. 10.—The World- Herald today sent by telegraph one thousand dollars to the First Nebraska regiment located at Manila, and one thousand dollars to the Third Nebraska regiment, commanded by Col. William J. Bryan, now at Savannah, Ga., pre paring to start for Cuba. Rescuers Come In the Nick of Time to These Men Newport News, Va., I tec, 10.—The steamship Pinners' Point. Captain Jen kins. from Liverpool to Norfolk, reach ed here this afternoon, having on boatd Captain Gheen and crew of seven, ta ken from the thiee mast*'d schooner Angle L. Green, which the Pinners' Pit sighted at 3 o'clock Wednesday morning about 800 miles northeast of this port. The schooner was dismasted, hud lost all of her boats and was waterlogged, wltli waves sweeping across lier deck, i upon which the crew were huddled The steamer sent a boat to the schoon- , er and took the hair dozen .half start ed men from the sinking wreck, it If ■ sunk before the steamer had proceeded j very far after taking the crew aboard. WIRES IN CUBA The System of Telegraph Lines In Cuba to be Repaired. Washington. Doc. 10. —General Gree ly, of the signal corps, Is preparing for a practical experience Iji the govern ment operation of the telegraph, and to this end, Colonel Dunwoody, one of the most experienced and scientific officers In this branch of the service, has been ordered to Cuba to take charge of the extensive network of telegraph lines on the Island. He will leave Wednesday and will rnuke his headquarters at Ha vana. There are about 2.000 miles of telegraph wires connecting the various main points of the island, all owned by Spain and to I-; left behind when evac uation is completed. Eventually, It Is presumed these lines will belong to the Cuban government, but during the Uni ted States military control of the Ist two thousand miles of wire must be cared for and operated by the United States forces. FEARS FOR HER The Safety of the Schooner William O Snow In Question. Boston, Dec. 10.—Grave fears are entertained for the safely of the tbree mc.stad schooner William O. Snow, (’apt. Bills, from Newport News. Nov. 22, for Salem. Mass. The vessel should have liecn somewhere In the vicinity of the Massachusetts coast during the hurricane of Nov. 27th. The passage generally occupies n>t longer than a week at this lime of year. The cargo of the schooner consisted of 855 lous of coal, consigned to Salem. The Snow is owned by J. A. Bowen, of Fail River, and hailed from Taun ton, Mass. She was a Balh built ves sel, was constructed In 1881, ar.d her registered tonnage was 560. Alltoid she would probably carry a crew of eight men. ffl The Stars and Stripes Up Havana, Dec. 10, 4 p. in. —The Unit ed States flag was unfurled over the city hall of Mar'anao at 12:30 o'clock this afternoon by Colonel Young, commanding the battalion of engineers at Playa del Murlanao. A detachment of engineers drawn up in the square presented arms, and the Americans and municipal officers present stood with bared heads during the ceremony. The Eighth Infantry. Huntsville. Ala., Ihc 10. —The Eighth Infantry departed tonight for Port Tampa, where they will embark for Havana. Their orders instruct the commanding officer upon arrival at Havana to report to the cofcimander of the Seventh corps.
