IS.—Commissary General Egan, of the War Department, continued his testimony before the war mvestigatuug commlhsion toiiuy. He urged that the subsistence department control all transportation of all Ita own supplies, and of furnishing means for cooking, and eating. He thought the quartermaster gqneral's department overburdened with duties Innumerable. He pointed out that the British army was not a» well fed by any means as our own, and that the rations already provided for the United State# soldier* were satisfactory, with the possible addition of dried fruits. He spoke of the constant and urgent importunities, which he said sometimes amounted to peraacutlon. that various articles of food be added to the regular rations. One well known senator, whose name waa withheld, he said, proposed and 1 insisted on one article being added, which he claimed would cost about 1 cent ration. Rev. Boh White Sunday morning preached to a large congregation In Christ Cbu ch. from a part of the fourth vorae and fourth chapter of the Gospel according to St. Matthew. The subject of bis discourse was, “It is Wr.tten." He stated that when a clergyman had ta ken the vows of tha church upon his knees he received a copy of the sc Ip tures in his hand with the Injunction to preach the gospel to every crea- j ture. This was the commission and ere-1 dentlal of an amhaaoadorr. He did not give the Bible back to the church and ask to be allowed to preach only certain pa ts of It, but he accepted It in It* entirety and exclaimed. "Woe is me if I preach not the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.'* "He who be lleves shall be saved." The sin of un belief Is a great Bin and here was whe-e the great influence of Satan was exerted,. The one faithful peacher was our Lord and no one ever preached as he preached. Whe ever he quoted the writings of the Old Testament It was to confirm them, not to throw doubt upon them. “It Is written.” means “by the finger of God.” It la the supreme court of final ar bitration. We are' not to preach or believe what we would like to think or what we would like to l.elic-ve, but what Is wdtten. Mr. White s;ated that there was a tendency In modern times to expunge the word "everlast ing” from the scriptures. This new doctrine was made tfc apply to ever lasting punishment and to remove it from the belief of Christians, and yet the doctrine of everlasting hell can be deduced from the sersneo on the mount. If we accept the Idea of eternal life we must accept the Idea of ete nal j death. If we expect everlasting reward | we must admit the idea of everlasting punishment. If we hope for everlasting salvation, we must fear everlasting destruction. Men die and their opinions change, hut the Word of God is immutable and although heaven and earth may pas* away what the finger of God has writ ten shall not pass away.
