CURIOUB FEATURES OF LIFe
Lone Widow’s Hundred Csts.
FFroni the Toronto Globe.
A singular case was decided in *
Montreal court yesterday. Mrs. L.
Brossard. widow, resides In a rented
house and iter landlord moved to
have the lease cancelled on the
ground that, the woman used the house
more as a menagerie than as a place
of human habitation.
It was set forth that about a hun
dred cats were kept by this lonely
widow, and the plea was Ihat they not
only injured the premises but wer*
a nuisance In the neighborhood.
The woman conducted her own de
fence. She argued that she was a
poor, lone widow and therefore should
be allowed to have as many cats aa
she thought necessary to solace her
declining years. Judgment, was ren
dered by Judge Taschereau, who or
dered Ihe woman to vacate the house
and lo pay all the rent due as well
as the costs of the case.
Police Too Good for the Town.
From the Ixmdon Express.
South Molton, a little Devonshire
town which is policed hy the county,
has a grievance against pplicc meth
ods.
Serlou* charge* were brought
against the force at the monthly
meeting of the council when an ex
mayor proposed a resolution that It
was the duty of tne council "to re
port the autocratic and tyrannical ac
tion of the police.”
The ex-mayor’s Indictment was as
follows;
"All the innkeepers of the town are
watched like a cat watches a mouse.
It Is no exaggeration to say that
they eairy on their business In fear
and trembling.
"Country people are afraid to come
Into the town for fear of being molest
ed by the police. No wonder the po
lice are unpopular; they deserve to
be. People have been spoken to by
the police for laughing In the street*.
“A hank clerk was recently sitting
In the corporation pew at church, and
as he did not. turn lo the east during
the recital of the creed ho was touch
ed by a policeman .standing near and
told he must turn."
Another member of the council who
was recently proceeded against for
leaving a package outside his shop
told of two young people who were
remonstrated with by a constable for
stopping to talk to a third person aa
they left the church. The constable
told them they must move on.
He also mentioned the case of two
children who were seen by a pollc*.
man running t brought the street. The
constable told them they must walk.
For Kaiser's Hundred Thousandth
Pnesoant.
(From the London Chronicle.)
There is a game preserve' In Ger
many owned hy Count Tschlrchsky-
Renard, who has raided a monument
there in honor of the kalsor. It com
memorates the occasion when the
kaiser shot his fifty thousandth cock
pheasant Marble and porphrv hear
witness to this achievement for the
rest of time. But that happy cock
pheasant was Immolated two years
ago, and since then the kaiser’s bag
has grown prodigiously. What monu
ment. even in brass, will be good
i nough to celebrate his hundred thou
sandth cock pheasant?
