TIMES-DEMOCRAT SUMMARY.
(By H. t V. & C.)
NEW ORLEANS, La., Jan. 4.—An
i Improved demand, generally the pur
chase of several substantial lots of
| cotton for Liverpool account, contin
ued positive resistance on the part, of
the Interior to the recent decline and
the buying of options by spot houses
Indicating partial revival of spinners’
Initial demand boosted the cournge of
' speculative longs and somehow seem
ed to promote bullish confidence in
the coming bureau report, thus check
ing the growth of bearish sentiment
and supplying tone and stamina to
yesterday’s cotton market. There was
no change whatever In the general
situation. For months spot condi
tions have been Identical. In the ab
sence of demand there has been no
pressure to sell. When demand de
velops the strength of the spot holders
hand becomes apparent. And for the
present at least that’s Just about all
there Is to the current market argu
ment.
Bmith~-My boy thinks he'll be a
pirate when he grows tin.
Jones —Thinks there is more money
in piracy than anything else, <eh?
Smith —Yes; but I think he's got
Morgan, the bucaneer, mixed up with
Morgan, the financier.

TOWN TOPICS.
(By H.. V & C.)
NEW YORK. Jan. The specula
live situation will continue to bo dom
inated by the rate for call money, any
flurry in the rate will Influence sell
ing. Traders who carried stocks
through December are much disap
pointed over the high rate they were
charged by their brokers and to a cer
tain extent this has modified the dis
position to buy until money works to
n lower level. The Indications are
that easy conditions will prevail In
the money market later In the week,
and that, by the middle of the month
call money will again rule on a nor
mal level.
The foreign markets do not reflect
any uneasiness over t(ie reports of
wnr preparations by Germany, and
there is nothing in the general situa
tion that should induce traders to
take a position on the bear side. An
Irregular market Is to be expected for
a few days and It will he ndvisable to
take a scalping position for turns of
a couple points, buying on sharp re
cessions and selling on the rallies.
The position of the st\>el stocks Jus
tifies confidence In thorn and the re
action in the copper shares has placed
those stocks in a better position.
Bullish sentiment on the coni stocks
is general and it is confidently ex
pected that Reading will he carried
across 150. Bull points on St. Paul In
the expectation of the Issue of new
stock with rights to stockholders. In
terest Is running more to the low
priced railroad stocks. We do not
look for anything hotter than a trad
ers' market today, but we would buy
on declines.
Sentiment on wheat is bullish, hut
we would not. follow Ihe advance
much further.
A moderate reaction in cotton is ex
reeled, Hut It is a trading market un
til the ginners’ report is out.

Norden says rubles two better titan
expected at the opening with fair
business done Our market will pro!)
ably work wlihtu narrow limits until
a tln government report nn January 8
This will probably bring more ae
tivlty, which at the present la badly
needed. Miss Giles’ report whs con
st.ued as bullish by the local opera
tem and started some slight advance. I
1 do not look for any Improvement It:
market at the present time.
Judging from appearances wc will
have nothing more than sculping con
ditions until the report of the Bth.
Believe that higher prices will pr*
vul' at a later date, but do not advts.v
puiehaaes except on,easy moments.
Dry goods market yesterday con
tinued moderate Light trade.
Brown says: Call money Is expec,-
cd to remnin stiff during balance of
week and market will he somewhat lr
regular In consequence, hut the ten
dency of rntes Is downward, which
should encourage bullish operations
later on.
Blodtn says: The moderate reaction
nted not lessen the faith of those who
arc building on a bull market this
month. In fact, a further reaction
anti Increase in short Interest woul 1
