TIMES-DEMOCRAT SUMMARY.
(By H., V. A V.)
NEW ORLEANS. Ln.. Jan. 6.
Speculators who banked on a golden
harvest from another hull year In cot
ton are disappointing n beguiled pub
lic by the utter absence of enthusiasm
accompanying their retrospective talk
of current prosperity. It. has been a
weary game at best, for though the
bears have been unable to uproot the
price structure, Iho hulls have been
unable under the weight of heavy pro
mi unis to make much headway except
in Ihe role of scalpers. But at the.
same time the farmer, tinder the new
order of things, cotton wise has held
his own well enough, for he has profit
ed thereby nt the expense of both
sides the account.
Yesterday’s cotton market proved a
small but hitter pill on tlie sensitive
palates of speculative longs. Rumors
and counter rumors kept the talent
in a sweat over the National dinners'
report. Authentic information wa.-v
unobtainable even at the close, inis
upset the nerves of room traders and
undoubtedly caused the liquidation of
some long cotton under the fear that
the census bulletin next week might
range above 9.700,000 bales to Decem
ber 31st. However, the primary fac
tor behind the day's speculative de
cline of some eight points was the
slackened tension In the demand for
actual cotton. The into sight figures
for the season tints far place this
year well behind the record for two
years ago if the old cotton carried
over from the monster crop of last
year and included in the current rec
ord into count. But the week-end fig
ure!; favored the bears rather than tho
bulls ln both spinners takings and
visible supply variations.
TOWN TOPICS.
(By H.. V. & C.)
NEW YORK. Jan. 6.—Speculative
sentiment lias turned strongly to the
Bullish side of the market, influenced
| by the favorable Interpretation placed
on Mr. ScJiiff's statement and by the
I belief that we are particularly out of
the woods, so far as the money mar
ket Is eoncerned, although wo cannot
calculate upon continued low rates
until later in the month. There is no
doubt that we have turned the cor
ner and that movement of funds from
the interior will Increase the avail
able supply to an extent that, will as
sure ruling low rates.
With general conditions favorable
traders anticipate Important develop
ments In Ihe stock market, chief of
which will tie the action of A. C. P.
and Union Paellie dividends this
month and an increase in both Is ex
pected. A. C. P. is to he placed on
a 6 per cent basis and Union Pacific
to receive an extra dividend of at
least 1 per cent. Much higher prices
are predicted for these stocks and for
Sugar, and the general market to have
a proportionate advance. On any
sharp bulge we would take profits with
a view to buying back on reactions.
The market should lie strong today
and firmness is Indicated for the
wheat and cotton markets.

Mother— But I think, dear, your

NEW YORK. Jan. 6. Nordon says:
('allies were due three lo four down
and come six. While there U mottl
ing especially new In the situation,
the bearish feeling Is not quite as
strong as It has been recently. On
th< oilier hand, bulls are not showing
their confidence by buying 11. I
think we can buy futures lower than
lust night's dose.
NEW YORK. Jan. 6.—John Muir
says; “I favor purchasing cotton on
any decline in market. It Is prob
able that market will sell off n lit-
Ik before taking nny advance.”
NEW YORK, Jan. 6. - White says:
"The move In I'nlon Pacific yesterday
due to past predictions that the stock
would shortly sell at 175. Gates'
house, Wassertnan, Strong Sturgis
were big buyers. Look for 160 be
fore the end of next week.
NEW YORK. Jan. 6.- White says;
"The buying of Steel stocks by Iho
Morgan brokers leads me to believe
that Ihe hull campaign in Steels has
just begun. Talk of fifty for the com
mon is going the rounds.
Edmunds says. "I hear that Union
Pacific is to get the regular dividend
with one per rent extra at the next
meeting of the company. This will
leave the stock on five per cent bas
is, which has started excellent buy
ing. The talk of selling at. 176 gain
ing strength every day. Advise its
purchase.
niodin says: Careful inquiry among
Standard Oil men develops the fact
that they are all enthusiastic hut's
on the stock market. They say with
out reserve that the trend is toward
much higher levels. They support
Sugar on nny decline of two to three
points, and I believe Sugar will soon
-touch 160.
