WALL STREET REVIEW.
NEW YORK. Jan. 6.—Today proved
to be one of the two or three most ac
tive Saturday half days in this history
of the stock exchange, transactions in
the two hours rising well over a mil
lion shares. The strength of the mar
ket was striking and comprehensive,
notwrithstandlng some slight Irregular
ity and occasioned reactions Profit
taking in fact was on a large scale,
but the readiness with which it was
absorbed was striking. The fact that
yesterday's trading failed to show
the late reaction, which had occurred
on each former day of the week,
served to convince speculative opin
ion that the week's testing operations
had proved the strength of the mar
ket with the definite relapse in the
rates for money on rail. St. Paul and
the Southwestern Pacifies were cen
tral features of the market and gos
sip was very busy with forecasts to
the amount of the forthcoming t'nlon
Pacific dividend Several industrial
specialties which have not moved
hitherto also rose suddenly and vio
lently. The copper stocks and tne
coalers were forced back after show
ing early strength by the weight of
realixlng sales. There was an enor
mous absorption of F. 8. steel which
advanced it to the highest record <«n
the present movement. The stock
market showed a late revival of
strength and closed extremely active
hut still Irregular Total sales of
bonds par value $1,845,000.
Total sales 1,054.800 shares.
HAYWARD. VICK A
CLARK'S LETTER.
NEW ORLEANS. La . Jan. 6.—The
cotton market was dull and easy to
day Both sides displayed consid
erable nervousness over the approach
ing Census Dinners' report, but more
longs than shorts let go their holdings
which resulted In a decline of a dollar
a bale In the trading up to 11 o'clock.
The weekend figures favored the
Lears, spinners takings being disap
pointingly small and causing bearish
variations In the visible supply state
ment The leading bear Interests in
New York displayed considerable ag
gresslveness which had a sympathetic
effect on this market. The market
opened easy at a decline of 13 points.
Uverpool was disappointing and no
support came from the bulls. After
the opening, on a quiet and feature
less market, prices gradually eased
off until they were 20 points lower
than the level of yesterday's closing
This carries the trading up to 11
o'clock.
The market closes today not to
open until Tueeda.' tnorn'O't A: t

bureau will Isauc Its report on the
amount of cotton ginned prior to Jan

the week ending yesterday at 226.000
bales vs. 340,000 hales this week last
year and 381,000 hales this week In
1904 Thin made total takings thus
far this season 4.671.000 bales against
4,*"7.000 to the same date laet year
and 4.361.000 to the same date In
1904. The smallness of the takings
caused a decrease of only 22.578 bales

crease compared with a decrease this
week last year of 57.685 bales and a
decrease this week two years ago of
40,976 bales
The spot market was dull, either
buyers not sellers caring to trade with
♦he hureap report hanging over the
market. Some spot men called the
market an eighth lower, but up to 11
o'clock there was hardly enough trad
ing to warrant quotations of any
kind.
NHW YORK. Jan. 6.—The National
iJlnner!-.’ Association reported the
r mount ginned to January Ist as 9,-
694 041 hales and incidentally that
*h*dr (artier reports were not. reliable.
Alter such an acknowledgement very
little attention will he paid to their
figures during the remainder of the
season. The week-end statistics were
not bullish Liverpool closed 6 to 7
down. We opened 8 to 10 lower and
continued the decline right up to the
close, which is about 20 points under
yesterday. The undertone has been
weak, selling being general with con
stant bear hammering. Indications
are for an Irregular market until after
the publication of the Glnners' re
port which has been postponed from
Monday until Tuesday and general
sentiment regarding it is growing de
cidedly bearish.
WARE & LELAND'S LETTER.
NEW ORLEANS. Jan. 6.—Liver
pool showed conservatism in the face
of an accumulation of bearish fea
tures. Futures closed 5 to 6 lower
against 1 due and spot, sales were
7.000 bales at 4 lower. The ytslble
supply statement for the week shows
that trade suffered, if not by the
height of prices, bv continued dis
parities between the markets brought
about by speculation and is following
a strict hand to mouth policy. Ate
sence of spot demand and on top of '■
all a report hy the National (tinners'
Association giving 9.694.041 ginned to
December 31st and estimating* 99.4
picked; 98 per cent ginned. While
this Indicates a crop of about 9,891,00"
bales, the ginning figure Is too close
to 9.7. on which a break in the mar
ket Is expected, if confirmed by the
census next Tuesday.
Our market opened 13 to. 15 lower, 1
and but for relative steadiness in New
York there would have been further
decline, as against the liberal long
selling by wire houses there was pro
fessional short covering on account of
Monday being a holiday here. Judg
ing from expressions of opinions on
the floor, disappointment after disap
pointment on the long side has pretty
well killed all hope for success on the
hull side, at least for the time being,
and the tactics now is to prevent a
general liquidation. While we con
tinue to believe in full consumption
for the season and that the shortness
of the crop will assert itself in time,
there is an active spot demand that
will turn the idea and this might only
show up after the disparities between
markets have risappeared through fur
ther liquidation of speculative inter
ests.
The eensus glnners' report will be
published Tuesday at 1 o'clock Cen
tral time. Spots today neglected.*
about 18 lower to sell, and little of
fering A weak closing In New York
started again long liquidation hy oth
er houses. March declining rapidly at
11.57. Further weakness expected
Monday in anticipation of a glnners’
report above 9.7 the day after.
NEW YORK COTTON SUMMARY
NEW YORK. Jan. 6. —Cotton mar
ket opened barely steady at a de
cline of two to five points and during
the earl\ session ruled weak and un
settled under more or less general
selling with prices working off to a
net decline of about 11 to 13 points.
Lower cables bearish week-end stat
istics and disappointment over the
showing of the National Ginners’ re
port seemed the chief factors in the
decline. Around 1149 for March
there was some demand for shorts
anu prices rallied three to four points
but the market showed continued
nervousness in the middle morning
and there was comparatively little
sign of bull support.
Receipts of cotton at the ports to
day 14.155 bales against 26.960 last
week and 31.868 last year. For the
week I estlma'ed 1 125.000 bales
against 149.799 last week and 179.
893 last year. Today's receipts at
New Orleans 4287 bales against 11.-
019 last year, and at Houston 4,988
bßles against 4.545 last year.
NEW ORLEANS COTTON.
NEW ORLEANS. Jan. 6.—Spot
cotton dull, weak and lower. Salps
53* bales. Induing 406 to arrive.
Quotations reduced 1-8; middling
11 9-16.
Futures opened 10 to 14 points off
and the trend of prices was distinctly
downward throughout the half day's
session. Influenced largely by the bear
lsh report of the National Dinners'
association, placing the amount gin
ned tip to December 31. at 9,694.000
bales, and the fear that the bureau re
port to be Issued next Tuesday will
also be bearish. With very slight
fluctuations the market declined gradu
ally after the opening, closing at tb*
bottom with net losses of 27 to 32
points.

BU&IDAY, JAN. T.
DRY GOODS.
NEW YORK. Jan. 6.—The week
ended with little Increase in trade In
the dry goods market as far as first
hands were concerned. Increased In
dependence seemed to exist In a good
many quarters, however, and the man
ufacturers seemed Inclined In many
Instances to look for a higher range
of values.
GRAIN QUOTATIONS.
CHICAGO. Jan. 6.—Prices in the
wheat pit here today continued the
downward course commenced yester
day, prominent commission houses
siding the decline by persistent sell
ing. At the close wheat for May de
livery was off 3-6. Corn was down 3-8
al-2. Oats showed a loss of 1-8. Pro
visions were a shade to five cents
higher.
