OLD SORES
Old Sore* that refuse to heal are a eoustant
menace to health. They sap the vitality and undermine the constitution bv
drmimnjr the system of its very life fluids, and those afflicted with one of
these ulcers grow despondent and almost desperate as one treatment after
another fails. They patiently apply salves, washes, plasters, etc., hut in

ing flesh, destroying the tissues and growing to be a fostering, inflamed and
angry mass. The source of the trouble is in the blood. This vital fluid is
filled with impurities and poisons which are constantly being discharged
into the *>re or ulcer, makiug it impossible for the place'to heal. It will not
do to depend on external applications for a cure, because they do not reach
the real cause, and valuable time is lost experimenting with such treatment
the most they can do is keep the ulcer clean. Anv sore that will not hen! is *
dangerous, for the reason that it may hare the deadly germs of Cancer behind
It. A cure can be brought about only through a remedy that can change the
quality of the blood, and this is what 8. S. S. does.’ It goes to the' very
bottom of the trouble, drives out the poisons and germs with which it is

CURED OF CONSUMPTION BY
SLEEPING IN THE OPEN AIR
NEW YORK, .lan. 17.—" Its ex
hilarating and I like it,” was the re
mark made by the Rev. Dr. Clenden
nin. of Chappaqua, who stands today
a living example) of the efficacy of the
open air treatment for tuberculosis.
During the last six months Dr. Clen
donin. who Is a son-in-law of the late
Horace Greeley, haR practically lived
In the open air. spending hut little
more time within doors than it takes
to eat his meals or partake of the
nourishment prescribed by his phy
sician. Dr. Russell, of the Poat-Uradu
ate hospital.
He drives during the day or in
dulges in long tramps, but he sleeps
on a baleony off the third story of
his house with as great a degree of
comfort, he declares, as if he were
resting on the downiest of cots in the
most luxurious room.
On a cot with not even the canvas
roof protecting him except on stormy
nights he lias spent every night since
the tirst of September and today when
seen at his home said emphatically:
1 have never felt such exhillration
before ami I have come to like It.
Now the house feels hot and stuffy
and 1 am not comfortable or satistied
|to remain Indoors very long at a
I time. Strange to say, 1-have never
felt any inconvenience so far as my
s face and head are concerned. 1 wear
it cap on my head, hut nothing over
my fare.
"Every one tells me l look like a
i different man and I certainly feel it.
When 1 began to take the treatment
last September I was thin and emaci
ated ami had a had cough, but almost
from the first moment 1 began sleeping
out of doors 1 begun to show improve
ment.
"No, 1 don't use a sleeping hag. but
sleet> on an ordinary cot and have
1 only woollen clothlnß or eiderdown
covering. I wear pajamas and over
them an eiderdown wrapper. Very
frequently 1 add a heavy overcoat on
particularly cold night. Over me arc
woollen blankets and one to two elder
down tpiilts. according to the severity
id the weather."
No one to sm the little balcony
where Dr. I'leudeuln -sleeps would
think It were fitted for anything more
than summer comfort. Awnings have
been arranged so that a top can be
rolled, nnrtflled and canvas sides let
down, but it is only in stormy weather
that the patient makes use of them.
From the doctors hanging balconv
he can look over utile* of picturesque
country, now snow covered, but not
bleak or barren. Mrs. Clendennln oc
cupies the room front which the bal
cony juts and is always near at hand
to attend to her husbands wants.
Both she and her daughter are very
happy over the marvelous cure of their
husband and father, and though Dr.
t'lendennln has not ns'vet returned to
his parish he will do so by Easter, it
is said.

THROATS AND BACK-STICKERS

WASHINGTON. Jan. 17.—The sen

dured by Mr. Culberson calling upon
the secretary of war to supply the
senate with Information aa to whether
any member of the Philippine com
mission or any officer of tho army or
navy of the United States owns or has
any Interest In any land In the Is
lands. The secretary 1* directed also
to state where such land la situated,
"particularly with reference to loca
tion of proposed railroads in said la
lands."
Mr. Tillman addressed the senate
on the statu* of affairs In Santo Do
mingo. He quoted extracts on the
Monroe doctrine from the last annual
message of the preaident. He laid
especial stress upon the president's
declaration that “no just and orderly
government has anything to fear from
us.”
“Is the converse true, that an un
just and disorderly government has
something to fear from us?" Mr. Till
man asked, “because If It la therein
lies an Immense amount of trouble for
this country."
It meant, he said, the president in
tended to set tip a standard and com
pel the South American nations to
adhere to it.
Ho contended it would not benefit
tho country to "wrench and stretch
the Monroe doctrine beyond all prece
dent. It will not benefit us to step
forward upon every pretext with a
policeman’s club to enforce claims of
bondholders. That is the aunt and
substance of the new departure."
Mr. Tillman quoted from the Spring
field Republican, which he character
ized as a clean and careful newspa
per. a history of Morales' career.
“An admirable picture,” he exclaim
ed, "of the kind of government our
great and good president has taken
under his wing—a government of cut
throats, back stickers. assassins, de
bauehers and libertines, and every
thing awful that the English language
may be used to describe."

Says Rockefeller Cannot Be Young.
! (Cleveland, Ohio, Correspondence New

According to Prof. A. C. Rngnall, of
j West High school, all efforts which
, John D. Rockefeller may make to gain
! a youthful old ago will be hopeless.
Prof. Bagnall lectured Sunday after
noon before the Open Platform society
oil "Chloroformed ill Sixty.”
"Mv. Rockefeller’s w ish for youth is
coming too late." said Dr. Bagnall. "It
will never help him now. A man must
be pure In mind to be young—there
and In his body. A ntan who has
] taken such an active part in bringing
about the present financial monstrosi
ties cannot help hut be old. All the
; dew foot baths, golf and out-door ex
ercises won't help hint now.”
Dr. Bagnall argued that a man can
so live that he shall always be young.
."I would have nothing less than a
simple life," he said. "You uotice I
say a ’simple life.' ordinary, quiet,
simple life, not the professional stm
| pie life."

Plantene is made from choice summer yellow cot

It insures the full preservation of those invaluable

The whole story of its superiority is told in
the fact that educated, experienced, discriminat
