He corrected ills statement, and
stated the proposition correctly, which
Is, of course, I hi' reverse, that "These
defendants are presumed to tie Inno
cent until their guilt is shown by
competent testimony."

the defendants to the old indictment.
The district attorney had asked for
two extensions of time. The clock

CORNERSTONE OF POSTOFFICE.
SPAHTANBCRG. Jan. 19.—The cor-;
nerstone of the new postoffice building
will probably be laid, February 22.

schools may take part in the cere

The 22nd of February, which is a
national holiday, is a most appro*
priate day for laving the cornerstone
of the government building and if
arrangements can. be made to lay the
stone on this date the occasion will
be fittingly observed in Spartanburg.
A meeting will probably be held this
afternoon to decide whether it will he
possible to hold the exercises on the
anniversary of the birth of Washing
ton.
In speaking about the matter this
morning. Prof. Frank Evans, supor-

thar he hoped the 22nd, of next month
would be selected as the day for plac
ing the cornerstone, for all the pub
lic schools will have a holiday and the
children will have an opportunity to
attend the exercises.

Shortly afterward Mr. Backes
boarded a car on which were Mr.’
Hurley and the company's counsel.
Mr. Hurley promptly ordered Mr.
Backes off the car, and a scuffle en
sued in which the manager was
shoved through a window and badly
cut. Mr. Backes was finally landed
in the street.
