WALL STREET REVIEW.
NEW YORK, Jan 20.—Activity
was at the boiling point In the stock
market today. A detailed analyst of
the net changes of the day reveals a
liberal sprinkling of net losses through
out thp list, in spite of the frothy
whipping up of prices In the spetyila
five favorites. This process was con
spicuous at the opening and again at
the closing, hut was taken advantage
of at both times to marker enormous
lines of storks and take profits out
of the market. The burden of sus
taining the late market was thrown
upon St. Paul, the 3 5-8 point rise
In which counteracted the realizing
movement which became general after
the appearance of the bank state
ment.
Of the earlier features Reading rose
In a volatltle manner four points to
a new record level. This atocK
closed again within a fraction of the
highest. Others did not fare so well.
Anaconda, after selling 12 points htgh
er than last night, closed 10 points
lower. Amalgamated Copper was
also under steady pressure of realiz
ing and the same was true of the Pa
cifies and Smelting stocks. United
States Steel preferred continued its
recent strong tone with a two-point
advance of which it saved more than
half at the last. The final slump In
Anaconda had a slightly unsettling ef
fect on the market which had com
menced to recover under the aggres
sive leadership of the St. Paul move
ment . *

2a6 points on the report of the Na

showing only 176,000 hales ginned be

bullish interpretation. Cables are
barely as good as due, however, there
were reports of more liberal spot of
ferings In the Atlantic states and the
market eased off during the middle
morning to about the closing price of
yesterday under scattering liquidation
and the absence of Important support.

DRY GOODS.
NEW YORK, Jan. 20—Operations
were of moderate size in the dry goods

in a very strong position. Buyers as
