NORTH GEORGIA PEACH GROWERS
IN FRIGHT OVER STATE OF WEATHER
THE PREDICTED FREEZE WOULD
MEAN LOSS OF THOUSANDS
UPON THOUSANDS TO THEM.
HOPING FOR THE BEST
No Material Damage Up to Saturday
Morning. But Buda In State of De
velopment Not to Withatand Fur
ther Cold.
ATLANTA. Ga.. March 17.—(Spe
cial.) —Reports received from the
fruit centers this morning show that
the crop has not been materially dam
aged, as a result of last night's freeze,
but it is feared that freezing weath
er. accompanied by a heavy fall of
frost, which Is predicted for tonight,
will he very injurious. With the
peach buds In their present state of
development they can stand a temper
ature as low as 28 degrees or 30 de
grees without being injured, if there
has been no recent rains and the buds
are dry. but a heavy fall of froat, ac
companied Uy freezing weather would
do inestimable damage to them.
If a freeze should be accompanied
by heavy winds it is probable that
the damage would be greatly increas
ed.
Few people realize the importance
of the peach crop of North Georgia,
and the general opinion Is that the
southern and central parts of the
state are the peach belt. But the
peach-raising section of the northern
part, of the state runs but little be
hind the southern and central por
tions. There are thousands of dol
lars invested in the peach orchards
of northern Georgia and heavy dam
age to the peach crop of that section
would mean great loss.
ATLANTA. Ga., March 17. —Reports
from prominent fruit growers in this
immediate section say no damage was
done to the peach crop by last night’s
cold. The local weather bureau pre
dicts frost and freezing weather to
night, In which event, fruit growers

SPEAKER CANNON FOR PRESIDENT;

HIM IN WASHINGTON LAST
NIGHT.
CONSIDERED IN THE CABINET
Claims for Him Are That He Would
Greatly Offset the Claim of Radical
Democrats and Suffielsntly Opposed
to Wall Btrsot Interoats.
WASHINGTON. D. C., March 17.
(Special.)—lt Is stated here tonight
on what is accepted as the very best
of authority, that Speaker Joseph
G Cannon will have the hacking
of President Roosevelt In his cam
paign for the presidential nomination
of the Republican party In 190 R
For some time it haa been recogniz
ed that both "Uncle Joe” Cannon anld
Mr. Fairbanks were working quietly
for the nomination, while others,
prominent in the cabinet, have been
often mentioned an presidential as
pirants. Mr. Taft, however, has now
been practlcntly shelved by the pres
ident, by the offer of a place upon
the supreme bench, and. It In said,
that of the other oligibles Mr. Roose
velt favors Speaker Cannon.
It Is stated that the advisability of
the speaker's candidacy has even
been discussed in n caolnet meeting.
The claim Is that hla nomination
would greatly offset the Influence of
the radical Democrats, while a candi
date. such as Mr. Shaw, It. la believ
ed. would strengthen the Democratic
claims agitlnst the Wall street inter
ests.
Mr. Cannon la considered Just the
kind of man needed by the Republi
can organization; one with sufficient
strength and yet one who Is In no way
Identified with the unselfish capital
istlc interests. It Is regarded as
probable that, with the hacking of
the president, his boom may be suc
cessful.
