NEW YORK STOCKS.
NEW YORK. March 24.—There
was very slight interest shown In to
day's stock market. Trading was
listless and the price movement very
narrow with no well defined tenden
cy. Reading's Irregular fluctuations
over a range of about one point be
low last night was followed to a less
degree by the general extent. The
market lacked the stimulating influ
ence which came from Reading s
strong advance yesterday and was
Inclined to sag. I,ater prices of the
week In the majority of active stocua
are not materially altered from those
of last Saturday, although there have
been considerable fluctuations dur
ing the week. The bank statement
showed no changes sufficient to alter
the uncertain feeling over the money
outlook. There was nothing doing In
the day's occurrences to indicate any
change in the money and exchar.-e
situation. The stock market cloryd
intensely dull and irregular in tone.
Total sales of bonds, par value,
$1,075,000.
Total sales of stocks were 208,106
shares.

A. & J. COTTON LETTER.
NEW YORK. March 24.—The cot
ton market is broadening out in a
very healthy manner. The Southern
shorts, who sold on prospects of in
creased acreage, were buyers during
today’s session, and the Dull move
ment is attracting a following
amongst shock exchange interests,
leadiflg to a demand from Wall street
houses. The market is not. therefore,
so dependent upon the support of the
bull clique as it was at the beginning
of the advance, and is getting gener
al enough to permit of swinging large
lines and thus allow the bull leaders
to prepare themselves to vigorously
support market on slight recessions,
while the biggest short interest is still
outstanding. Cables were higher than
expected, week-end figures bullish
and weather unsettled. The market
opened 5 to 9 points higher and sold
at new high levels for the movement.
There was a reaction of 4 to 5 points
right after the call, but realizing sales
were quickly absorbed, and the mar
ket rallied again to the previous high
point. The close was steady at a net
advance of 6 to 4 points.
Spinners’ takings for the week were
261,000 bales, against 256,000 bales
last year and 178,000 bales in 1903-

H. V. A C. NEW ORLEANS COTTON
LETTER.
NEW ORLEANS. La.. March 24.
For a Saturday, the cotton market
displayed remarkable strength, espe
cially when it is taken into consid
eration that it has been a bull week.
In the early hours it looked as If
prices were going to sag ofT material
ly under week-end profit taking .but
buying orders came In in good vol
ume arfd put prices off. The buying
seemed to be for the account of shorts
fully as much as for the account of
longs.
Some operators expressed disap
pointment that the market did not
advance more on the sensationally
bullish visible supply statement of
last night. The variations were about
the widest ever posted, the total sup
ply showing a decrease for the week
of 179.465 bales against an increase
this week last year of 26,360 and a
decrease this week in 1904 of
232. Spinners' takings for the week
were put at 264.000 against 256.000
last 'ear. and 183,000 in 1904. Luck
seemed to be with the bull camp a -
though, of course, every one nad been
expecting more favorable statements
as the season progressed. No one.
however, expected such a drop in the
supply as wns shown. Spinners tak
ings are now about 100,000 bales larg
er thus far this season than they
were two years ago. but are still un
der takings at this time last year, the
figures being 7.509.000 against ..766.-
000 and 7.407.000 in 1904. There are
many bulls who expect to see the dis
ference between takings this season
IUNOAY, MARCH 28.
and last season narrow materially
before long. The market opened firm
at an advance of 3 to 8 points on a
strong opening in New York. Liver
pool futures were about as expected
on the fluctuations in the American
markets yesterday again, but the vis
ible supply statement did not have ns
great an influence as was anticipated.
Soon after the opening offerings were
free, but in a short time buying set
in in sufficient volume to more than
absorb the offerings and the market
strengthened. Prices advanced In the
trading up to 11 o’clock until thay
were 11 points higher than yesterday
closing on the old crop positions and
5 points up on the new.
In the spot market there was good
looking around on the part of buyers,
who found only moderate offerings
and factors imbued with large Ideas.
Spots closed l-16c higher than yes
terday.
H. V. ft. C. NEW YORK COTTON
LETTER
NEW YORK, March 24.—Eased on
the advance on the curb here yester
day afternoon. Liverpool was due 3
points higher this morning. It open
ed fully up to expectations and held
the advance, closing at 5.92 for Mav-
June. with spot sales of 8.000 bales.
We opened 8 to 9 up. on new positions
and 7 to 8 on new crop. After some
hesitation in the first hour, during
which time there was at no time a
weak spot, our market commenced to
harden under constant support from
the bull clique, and what at time*
looked to be fresh buying, attributed
by the talent to wire and
houses and those having New Orleans
and Liverpool connections. May sold
at 10 for the low and 17 for the high
point, closing at 15 to 16, with a
slightly easier tendency on the curb.
Developments of the past few uai*
show that tlfe bull clique have the
market well in hand, that spinners
and shorts are growing more nervous
every day. and that the public is more
Inclined to come in. We have not
believed in this advance, though, in
view of the big interests at work, we
have advised our friends agalpst fight
ing it. but now. with all lights before
us. disregarding statistics and looking
at the technical position of the market
we must say that higher prices, tem
porarily at least appear to be in the
cards.
