COLLEGE DIIMOHD
MUCH INTEREST
Championship of State Prite Which
Student* In All Institutions of Learn
ing Are Concerned—Outlook for
This Year.
f
The college games around which
most Interest centers for Georgians
are those between the Georgia col
lege* and w-hleh decide the champion
ship of the slate. This is the third
year of this league and indications
are that the race will he harder fought
this year than ever, certainly it will
he much closed than last year when
Tech carried off the flag with a per
centage of l.ono,
Mercer won tt the year before, so
this year It is Georgia's turn, and un
less all signs fall she has an excellent
chance of landing It. Four out of the
six games she plays will be on her
home grounds. In 1904 five out of
Mercer’s six were on home grounds
Tech will this year have to play four
of her six away from home, while Mer
cer plays three at home and three
abroad.
Aside from the good fortune of play
ing a majority of theae games on her
own diamond. Georgia has decidedly
other and better (founds for htg.i
hopes. Retaining the most of her last
ypar’s team, she has drawn a number
lof splendid new players in Franklin.
Derrick, Hodgson, McDonald and
Broughton, io aav nothing of several
good new pitchers Southpaw Sullivan
is eaptaln again and no one can deny
either his special ability 11s n pitcher
or his all around excellence as a ball
player.
This year they have with them
Touch as coach, and his work is too
well known to require enconituns of
any sort. It Is already evident he
lias pul much life and snap in the
team and welded it into a most for
■ midable aggregation.
Mercer, too. has boon fortunate In
the matter of an influx of good new
material, some of which threatened
for a time to dispossess even Captain
j Crawford of his position.
Of these Mallory, slated for first
I base, is said to be a good batter, a
department whsrein Mercer was weak
last: year. With Connor, Kendrick and
I the heavyhitting Popper on third
again, a cracking good infield is as
i sured. in the outfield McCathorn is
l back. and new men will probably fill
the two vacant places. For batteries,
Mercer is well fixed —having Tomlin
son of last year in the box. along with
Smith, Shannon and Middleton, all of
I whom are reported "finds.” The cap
tain himself is behind the bat, so
nothing better could be asked.
In proportion as Georgia and Mer
cer have returned their veterans,
Tech seems lo have lost hers, (lager,
Cannon. Daniels. Brown. Myrlck and
Hyde ar e the absentees, and the
greatest of these is Gager. There re
mains Day. Hamilton. McMillan and
sub-pitcher, Beane. Butler, of the
1904 team is also on hand again,
however, and that “helps some,’ sir
that Tech is not. without, a good nu
cleus. A good man for first has ap
parently been found in Stiles, and
Hamilton has been pulled in from the
outfield lo play third, and lhat leaves
the only infield hole at second. At
piesent the pitchers, Day and Lafltte,
are being alternated at this position,
pending the determination of wheth
er Brown can spare time from his
college work to re-entpr the game.
Butler is in the center garden and
Robert and Beane are on his flanks.
Robert and Wilson, who is doing some
of the eatehlng, are scrubs of last
year.
Corbin, who is also a good catcher,
is making 'his first attempt, for the
team. Knight, of last year's sertfb, is
ja. fair outfielder and catcher, and
Combs, a freshman, gives distinct
promise. For pitchers. Tech is well
off, having Day, McElroy. Lafltte, But
ler, Beene, Chapman and Napier, and'
her heavy schedule will rail them in
to action.
Cribbing during examinations by
college athletes has not yet been i
stamped out.
Kittle sympathy from any quarter
is expressed for Capt. Ray Van Or
man. of the Cornell loot ball team,
because he has been ridden out of •
college by the students for eheating.
(ton Daly, the Yale oarsman who
lost Ills seal in the 'Varsity boat a
few days before the annual race with

HAS NOT RESIGNED
Printed Statement That He Had Re
tired from Richmond Hussars an
Error—Lieutenant Stevens Has Re
signed.
The Savannah Morning News of
yesterday contains the following:
"I,lent. J. Coleman Dempsey of
Troop K, First Cavalry, N. G. G„ has
tendered his resignation and has made
request that he be placed on the roll
ol retired officers.
The resignation of Lieut. Dempsey
Makes the second officer of the Rich
mond Hussars have lost within the
last two weeks. Lieut. Stevens re
signed about two weeks ago and his
resignation was accepted a few days
ago by the adjutant general. Both of
these young officers are well known
here, having visited Savannah on a
number of oeeaslona. They were
present at the cavalry encampment
several years ago and made a num
ber of warm friends during their stay
in Hie city. Capt. George H. Klton,
adjutant of the First Cavalry, for
warded the papers to Atlanta yester
day.”
A representative of The Herald to
day showed the above elippiitg to
the above well known officer of the
Richmond Hussars, ami he was very
much surprised at it. He said.
"1 have not resigned and I have no
Intention of resigning; strange, how
such a report got out.”
“Some of the officers,” he contln
ued, “did say in a joking way, tnai
if the hoys did not pay more atten
tion to attending drills, probably some
resignations would be in order, bill,
seriously, there is nothing in Hip art!
cle from Savannah, exeepl that part
concerning Dieut. Stevens; that Is
correct. He has resigned, and after
the inspeetion or the company next
Friday night his successor will lie
elected.’
Lieut. Dempsey is an enthusiastic
cavalry officer ami has always taken
a deep Interest In his troop. Ho
loves the militia and has no idea of
getting out of 11. He appreciates ihe
kind words of the Savannah News,
even though that paper is In error as
to his resignation, lip says an In
spection of the command will he
held next Friday nighl. and will soon
be followed by an election to fill the
office vacated by Lieut Htev. ns
And. It can be safely said that
Lieut. Dempsey will not retire from
active service for some time yet. He
is too able an officer, and his com
mand thinks 100 highly of him lo let
him drop the insignia of lleutent
for a good long while yet.
