WEONESOAY. MARCH 28.
THEATRICAL
The Play Lett Night.
The performance at the Grand last
night attracted a fair house. The part
of the program most widely advertis
ed, that of Mr*. Bitldwln'* mind rend
ing. wa* largely a repetition of the
performance given by the Fay* at the
Summer Theatre, though not »o clev
er as that of the latter.
The really worthy portion of the
performance wa* the sleight of hand
work of Mr. Keene. With a few ex
ceptions hla tricks were excellent,
and received very generous applause

Modjeska's Remarkable Versatility.
From the vindictiveness, hatred and
hardness of heari of 1-ady Mncheth to
the asperity, affection, wit and witch
ery of Beatrice Is shout as far a step
as can be taken in the renlm of dra
matic literature. At a sharp angle
front these Is file nobility and pathos
Ir the life and death of Mary Queen
of Scots. None but a truly great act
ress could so completely satisfy the
Ideals of each of these characters ns
to leave it an open question as to
which role shows her at her best. It
ts fitting, then, that Modjeska, who
has sounded the deepest note in each
of these eharacters, and whose por
trayal of eaeh has been called perfec
tion. should have selected as the rep
ertoire of her farewell testimonial
tour, the plays In which they occur.

“Isle of Spies."
! The Philadelphia Ledger of date
October 2«, has the following to say
anent the musical comedy—Tale of
Spice," which Is booked at the Grand
for April 5:
The bright, musical comedy, the
"Isle of Spice," was presented at the
Park Theatre by a splendid company,
in which Sam Mylle appeared as
Bompopka. the King; Miss Leslie
Leigh, as Teresa, the King’s ward;
Herbert Cawthorne. as Micky
O’Grady, the deserter from the navy;
I Harry Watson, his tearful companion,
Siubsy Mackinaw, and George Whyte,
as Lieut. Katchall. Teresas hero.
Honors easily fell to the funny
Cswthorne and Watson. The latter
was particularly humorous In the kiss
ing scene of the last act. Mr. Whyte
has a rugged, serviceable baritone,
sweet and clear; his acting was ex
cellent.
"Isle of Spice" will be seen here
on the sth of April.

of Georgia, will administer the Apos

Less Lawmaking, More Enforcement.
(New York Times.)
The lawmaking problem of this
country has become a very serious
matter. More than 20.000 state and
federal laws and amendments thereto
are put upon the statute books yearly
and they, with the hundreds of thou
sands already enacted, make a mass
that can be but poorly digested and
only furnish a hole for the mighty to
struggle through. Millions of the peo
ple's money are spent annually for
legislation that adds to the confusion.
Most laws derive their being from the
want of an individual or a corporation
and are passed by a system of trading
between legislators. What this coun
try needs and needs badly is not the
enactment of more laws, but en
forcement of them. J,
