When the officers first noticed the
woman she was walking down the
street. At the same time a negro man
was aeen walking In the opposite di
rection, apparently having just left
the woman. Before Officer Terrell
reached the woman she leaned heav
ily against a telegraph pole, and Im
mediately became very 111. She was
taken Into the basement of the church
nearby, and died there in a chair. A
number of persons who had just come
out of the church were present when
she died.

Early this morning Chief of Police
Granville Conner. Henry Merkle and
Kmmptt Small, president of the Ma

I naphtha launch and steamed down the
I river to the place where the Oconee

; had a merry time making the trip,
; and a still merrier one returning.
Soundings were taken every few
' hundred yards, and when the Oconee
was reached an attempt was made 1u
figure out the exact latitudinal and
! longitudinal apot of the waylaid ship.
Not being any too well versed In the
handling of the nautical instruments
the attempt proved a failure and this
message was sent hack to Macon:
“We have found the boat. It Is
tied up next to the bridge, harmless
and doing but little. All of the snags
in this vicinity have been rendered
null and void."
This message was received before
the naphtha launch and Its gallant
crew of adventurers returned.

reported birth of a "hoodoo baby" in
Atlanta, and many are planning pil
grimages lo the Gate City for the ex
press purpose of seeing the wonder.
It Is current report among the negroes
that the infant In question has horns,
"eyes like a devil” and the gift of j
prophecy, and that when he arrived
he complacently announced to his
startled mother that she would have
seven years of trouble.

announcement was made today that
all preliminary arrangements for the
construction of the Baptist college |
here have been completed, and con
struction will begin within the next :

soon as possible, and It has promised
to do so as soon as a force of hands
can he got together.
The plans for the main building
have been accepted. The building wilt
be of brick and will he two stories
high The first floor will contain
eight large class rooms, with a wide
cross hallway. On the second floor
there will he four class rooms, two
music rooms, an auditorium and two
dressing rooms, an auditorium and
two dressing rooms. This building
will cost $20,000.
There will he two dormitories, one j
for the boys and one for girls, which
will cost SIO,OOO. The plans for the
dormitories have not yet been drawn,

quire Kids to Keep on Clothes of
Some Kind In Their Bath Houie.
SAVANNAH. Ga , March 28 (Bp*
clal.t—For a couple of day* the au
pertor court of Chatham county haa
been wrestling with an Injunction suit
from the town of Thunderbolt.
Mr. Ernest Schmitt, who owns a
home tn sight of the hath house of
Mr. W. Alrmar. the mayor of Tun
derholt. la after him for permitting
men and boys to go tn bathing in a
nude condition at his hath houses. Mr
Schmitt complains that his wife and
company are often shocked by the
nude condition of young men and boys
who leap Into the water from the
springboard at the Alrmar bathing
place. He wants an injunction to pre
vent any such exhibition* during the
coming summer. He had hts flit last
summer.
Mr. Alrmar contends that there is
nothing immodest about the action of
the bathers and he doesn’t want them
to he made to stop, tt will remain to
be seen whether the masculine com
pany of the mayor can disport them
selves during the heated term as they
did last year. The court will decide
the qeustlon within'the next few
days.

HAS GONE TO THE WEST
Engineer in Charge of River Work
Leaves for His New Poet of Duty.
SAVANNAH, Oa„ March 28—(Spe
cial.) —Lieut. Col. James B. Quinn,
corps of engineer*. U. S. A., who has
1 been stationed in Savannah for the
past three years, left this morning for
Sioux City, where he Is to be station
ed in (he future.
He gave his testimony for the de
fense in the Greene and Gaynor case
| yesterday and as this was all that was
keeping him in Savannah he departed
for his new post this morning.
Col. Quinn has had a very pleasant
time in Savannah. He continued the
work as carried on by Captains Car
ter and Gillette and did it very suc
cessfully. It was thought he would
he permitted to remain here until the
time for his retirement a few years
hence, but the war department decreed
otherwise.
Col. Dan C. Kingman, who will have
charge of the Savannah office from
now on. also left today for his old
station at Cleveland. 0., where he will
arrange his affairs to locate in Sa
vannah" permanently. Or as long as
the war department says he shall
stay.

of entertainment that Odd Fellows in
other cities might adopt with profit.
They combined and gave a musical en
ter! ainment, followed bv serving re
freshments. This is a monthly affair
with these three lodges, Acorn. Con
cord and DeKalb. Once a month the
lodge acts as host for the other two.
