ARGO 4 JESTER’S GOSBIP.
NEW YORK, March 29.—The up-
Sward movement In the stock market,
j which started last Thursday after
noon, made further progress In the
first hour today, snd prlves for many
issues scored material advances. A
ft N. and N. Y. Central made gains
ranging from 1-2 to 1 per cent. The
important fact being that high records
number of other Issues, Including Un
ion Pacific. Sugar. A. R„ Bt. Paul. L.
already established have not only been
maintained, hut price limit* necea
sartly advanced wherever *ny accumu
lation of stock was effected. Wolf
Brothers wore noted as heavy buyers
of Union Pactflc. Reading fell ofT one
point, from opening to 134 1-2. Erlo
receded slightly on profit taking sale*.
London bought about 10,000 *hares
during the first hour.
Financial Bureau:
We believe Union Pacific. Erie and
Southern Pacific are now the best pur
chases. There is reason for believing
that Atchison. L. ft N.. A. C. P. and
8. R. are on the edge of an Important
rise. We continue bullish on A. R.
( and Reading, whleh should he bought
lon all recessions, investment In U.
js. Steel preferred and Republic Steel
1 preferred is reported. P. R. 8. and A.
C. F. are also In this category. l,ead
and I). R. are tipped for better figures.
IWe believe B. R. T. will be worked
higher. Retter prospect* of an In
'creased dividend for C. A O. Is caus
ing good buying of that stock, and 75
Is predicted for ('. F. I„ but It must
first absorb all the stock between 66
and 67. St. Paul, Sugar, Canadian Pa
rifle, (’. 0., M. K. T.. N. Y. C. and
R. I. are In trading position with a
stronger upward tendency.
Forecast;
Clear to partly cloudy weather pre
vails in all parts of the country ex
cept In the Sotuh Atlantic and Gulf
:states, where general rain has fallen.
In the Gulf states the rain has been
roather heavy and warnings of flood
stages In some of the rivers have been
issued.
Rain will continue In the East Gulf
and South Atlantic states Thursday,
and probably extend northward Into
the northern portion of the middle
Atlantic states. In all other parts of
the country fair weather with moder
ate temperatures will continue. The
temperature will fall tn the East Gulf
states Thursday and In the South At
lantic states Friday. Fair weather Is
also probable Friday, except, along the
South Atlantic states and Florida.
Rldgely; .
It is said now that the coal quea
tlon tR shaping liself towards arbitra
tion. The tape has Indicated some
thing of the sort for day*. Moreover,
if they fall together themselves.
President Roosevelt may Insist on the
opposing fan lons arbitrating their dif
ferences. There Is very little to say
beyond what, has been set forth In re
cent. letters. The tndney of the mar
ket Is upwards.
Ranger and Ettleson: The demand
(continues large and there are signs
that the short Interest. In actual cot
jton Is greater than supposed. Even
after the recent advance the market
appears in a» healihy condition as
jever after many long shaves persist
ently taken their profits with each
hulks and the speculative shorta have
not run to cover as anticipated.
J. H. Bache & Co.: It looks as
though the bull crowd contemplate
receiving cotton on their large lines
of May, If It becomes necessary, as
While they sell some on the advances
they buy them again on the declines,
It not adding to It. at least keeping
their original line in tact.
John Muir A Co.: The market Is
not. broad enough to give confidence.
Wo consequently advise extreme cau
tion and the buying of July only on
good breaks.
Marshall, Rpader A Co.: We ex
pect the statistical figures for the
week to show a liberal reduction In
supplies of American cotton which
should very soon begin to be lees than
last year.
Carpenter, Baggott A Co.: It seems
to he more of a professional affair and
with the bullish conditions and the
strong evidence of further advance we
had thought there would be a larger
general Interest. Of course, after :i
100-polnt. advance, there may be a re
cession a* any time, but conditions at
the moment are favorable to a bull
market and a further advance and we
would favor buying on any decline.
