AWFUL MURDER IN
ROWAN COUNTY, N. C.
most awful tragedy in the
VICINITY OF GREENSBORO IN
THAT STATE.
FOUR PEOPLE SLAIN.
Fifth Fatally Hurt—Murdered While
in Bed Asleep—Others of the Fam
ily on Another Floor Escape With
Lives.
GREENSBORO, N. C., July 14.
One f the most horrible tragedies in
the history of Rowan county occur
red near Barbers Junction, about 40
miles from tms city, this morning.
Between the hours of 1 and 2
o’clock an unknown person or per
sons entered the home of Ike Lyerly,
a well known farmer, while Its oc
cupants were asleep, killing Mr.
Lyerly, his wife and two of the
youngest children, and fatally wound
ing the third.
The parents and the three child
ren were sleeping in the front room
on the first floor, there being two
older daughters sleeping upstairs,
who were unmolested and were
awakened by the smoke and flames
from below, the criminal or crimi
nals having set fire to the house.
The two girls descended the stairs
to awaken their father and mother.
On reaching their room they beheld
their father and mother and the
three youngest children lying in bed.
Their heads were crushed and their
faces badly disfigured.
The two older daughters, Man- and
Addle, aged 18 and 16, respectively,
managed to carry the dead bodies
from the house and extinguished the (
flames.
Then they ran to the nearest
neighbor, W. B. Baroers, and told
the story of the awful tragedy. There
being no officers of the law at this
place, R. R. Milllken, train dis
patcher on duty at that hour, was
notified and promptly wired the
news to the sheriff at Salisbury, who :
farted at once to the scene with
mooauounds and a posse of armed
men. Bloodhounds were also sent
THE SUNDAY HERALD
Burtori‘Taylor= Wise Co.
from Winston-Salem to assist in the
pursuit of the guilty.
Mr. Lyerly was a highly respected j
citizen and well connected, and it is
inconceivable that any one should
have had anything against him or his
family.
Three negro men and a negro wo-|
man—George Erwin, Jack Dillingham
and Mitchell Graham and his wife'
have been arrested and put in jail at!
Salisbury on suspicion of complicity i
in the case.
Excitement is intense in the neigh- j
borhood and there is talk of lynchingi
if the criminals are caught.
Holding Them Safely.
CHARLoi'TE, N. C., July 14.
Sheriff Julian, of Rowan county, to
night brought to the city for safe
keeping Neal Gillespie, his son, John
Gillespie, Jack Dillingham and wife,
George Erwin and Henry Lee. col
ored, charged with the murder of
Isaac Lyerly, his wife and two child
ren, near Barbers .Junction, last
night. There was nothing to Indicate
a lynching at Salisbury, but the,
sheriff thought best to move the
prisoners. The coroner's jury tonight
fastened the crime upon all the
prisoners.
HORRIBLE TREATMENT
IMPOSED BY CAPTORS
Turned Loose in Jungle to Suffer
Horrors—Naked in Winter.
TOKIO, July 14. —A British steam
er, which has Just arrived from Tigil,
Kamschatka, brings news of eight or
ten men being held in horrible slav
ery at Tigil. According to all ac
counts they were starved and mal
treated and kept, without clothes dur
ing the winter.
A remarkable story Is also told in
detail of the capture of these men.
The Russians caught them on board
a fishing schooner, murdered ten of
the crew, stripped eight others nak
ed, and drove them Into the forest.
The men suffered terrible agonies
from mosquitoes, and the Japanese
owner of the vessel committed sul
eide.
