! COLUMBIA, S. C.—Comptroller
General Jones is preparing to put Into

goes Into operation next month. The
act, It will be recalled, was passed at
the last session of the legislature at
the instance of the fireman’s associa

Heyward only after a hearing from
the firemen and from the Insurance

sign the act at once and hence it dtd
not go into effect at that time, its
j operation commencing with the year.
The act places a tax of two per cent
on all fire and lightning insurance
companies, whether domestic or for

'companies are not taxed In this state
.■-o that there ia no record of the busi

get at these companies for the pur
poses of this act. The tax is $2 on
each SIOO of gross fire and lightning
business done in this state in suen
towns as have fire departments worth
SI,OOO or more, and the penalty for
(he non-payment of the tax is s3oo.
Where the city has paid a department

through the secretary' and treasurer
