Comedle Francalse, In Paris. Atten

artistic circles, because It came from
the pen of an Academclan, Henri:

strongest, most vlrllle and absorbing

The play created a profound sensa

discussed play In all Europe.
"The Duel” Is not one with rapiers,
but la a verbeal one. On one side
there Is a woman, the wife of a moral
degenerate, slowly dying as a result
of his excesses. Facing her in one di
rection stands a physician, who is a
scientist an agnostic and a cynical
scoffer at all the things honest men
hold sacred. On the pther side stands
a young priest, fired with religious
faith and belief. The materialist de

are brothers. The fight, is for the
preservation of her purity. Into this

of the contestants. In the end love
wins its own battle and the church

United States Army Engineer Says
Concrete and Tsrra Cotta Combined
Offers the Best Safeguard Against
Firs.
NEW YORK —Captain John S.
Sewell, Corps of Engineers, I'nited
States Army, signs an article In the
current Issuo of the Fireproof Maga
zine, which forecasts a new era In
fireproof building. Capt. Sewell's high
rank as an expert makes the opinions
be expresses In this, article the most
Important contribution yet brought
out In the vigorous discussion of con
struction problems now going on
among architects and builders all over
the country.
"In the matter of fireproof const ruc
tion," Capt. Sewell says, “reinforced
concrete should be treated as a
structural material, superior In many
respects to steel, but one demanding
protection from fire. It seems to me
that the logical line of development
is reinforced concrete, covered with
terracotta. I see no reason why the
terra citta should not be so developed
that It would take the place of a great
deal of the wooden centering which
forms such a serious Item of expense
in the execution of reinforced con
crete .
“Terra eo,ca exposed to fire is either
totally destroyed from expansion
stresses, or else it is entirely undam
aged. We should endeavor to so in
stall the terracotta that expansion
stresses may be taken up without
breaking. The fire cannot do tt any
molecular damage, so that If it es
capes damage from expansion and
contraction, it wil be absolutely unin
jured. A relatively small thickness of
terracotta would prevent concrete on
the Inside from becoming heated
enough to damage It.
“When the economy of doing away
with a lot of the wooden centering
is considered, it seems to me that this
combination of reinforced concrete
and terracotta offers a prospect of
improvement in fire-resisting con
struction, besides a very appreciable
economy."
Capt. Sewell has already carried
his ideas Into practice in the con
struction of tne buildings for the war
college at Washington.

Kirke La Shelle players at the Grand
Thursday. November 22, when they
will appear in the very popular
dramatization of Owen Wister’s fas
cinating novel of the pioneer west,
“The Virginian." This play is known
to be one which shows much clever
ness in construction, a true atmos
phere, and superb acting. The scenes
and incidents most prominent in the
novel are truthfully depicted iu the
play and the exact localities were
visited by artists in order to correct

a character that is highly exacting.

Frank Canipeau will play the leader

TESTS TO DEVELOP
BEST LOCOMOTIVES
Plant Where Largest Engines Can be
Run at Full Speed Indoors—Even
the Sparks are Weighed—Pen Rec
ords Kept of Engine Pulling Power.
ALTOONA, Penn., Nov—All the
conditions of a 1,000-mile run by a lo
comotive pulling a heavy train can be
duplicated in the huge indoor engine
trial plant which the Pennsylvania
Railroad has just computed here. By
the arrrangeinent of the testing ap
paratus the largest engines can be
run at the top speed without travel
ing inch. The great advantage is that
constant results are obtainable and
that these results can be measured
and tabulated with far greater exact
ness than Is possible road trials.
The amout of fuej consumed, the
steam evaporation, even the weight of
the cinders and aparks that go up (he
smoke stack, the friction of the va- !
rious parts—theses are only a few of
the elements of locomotive perfor- i
mances that, are asc< rtained at the i
tseting plant. Although this plant In-1
volved considerable expense, officials
of the motive power department say j
that the value of the results obtaina
ble with it far exceed the cost of the
venture .
Nine locomotives of different typos
not in regular use on the Pennsyl
vania have been purchased for testing
purposes. One of them is a French
engine, which although it is below the
Pennsylvania's standards, has sug
gested minor improvements in Ameri
can designs. “We recognize that pro
gress in locomotive building Is not
confined to any one road,” said one
of the Pennsylvania officials. "By
tests and service and by keeping in
touch with advanced practice else
where, we dertermine the best points,
and in the future are able to use to
advantage the ideas we get from this
study.”
A locomotive undergoing a test at
the Altoona plant rests on supporting
wheels. The drawbar is attached
to a stai ionary dynumoinerter with
scales which weigh the pull. The
supporting wheel axles extend so as
to receive absortlon brakes, and the
work done consists in overcoming the
resistance of the wheels and brakes,
the force exerted by the wrawbar be
ing measured by the dyamometer.
The scales of the measuring device
register the traction power of the lo
comotive, anil pens attached to (lie
scale levers make a permanent record
of the performance.
Tests curried out. under these condi
tions are so exhaustive and the rec
ords are so complete that for only
eight locomotives the tabulated re
sults fill a large volume of which
more efficient "iron horses” ran he
designed and built.
