REFORMATORY TO |
IMPROVE LAND BY
FEEDING CATTLE
BOARD DECIDES TO PURCHASE
HUNDRED CATTLE FOR NEW
FARM.
INSPECTED TUESDAY
Reformatory Board Went Over New
Farm and Made Important De
claiona—Cattle to Be Purehaeed and
Land Improved.
The Richmond county reformatory
hoard met on Tuesday at the new
reformatory farm, consisting of some
three hundred acres of land, situated
on the new Savannah road, about
seven miles from the city. The board
went over the farm on a general tour
of Inspection and made many impor-
I tant decisions as to the future raan-
I ugemant of the farm.
Various new buildings have been
j constructed and the farm Is in fine
■ shape In every way. Stables for four
teen head of horses have been built
and other outbuildings have been put
up.
? The board spent the whole day on
the farm and among their decisions
was one providing for the erection of
a large cattle shed. They will buy
oae hundred head of cattle and feed
them on cotton seed meal and hulls,
and fatten them to sell, and they will
he disposed of in the Augusta mar
ket.
This action was taken so as to se
cure manure for improving the farm,
as It Is too far to haul manure from
the city for such purpose. The erec
tion of the cattle shed and the pur
chase of the cattle will be made at
once. This is an important step and
shows what may be expected in farm
ing Augusta territory, as the
board ns adopted only such plans as
will prove profitable in farming and
others may well take lessons from
their work.
Though the year has been too wet
to he suitable for farming this sea
son, especially on the lower farm, the
members of the board expressed them
selves as well pleased on the whole
and complimented Supt. L. L.
Winter on ihe successful close of the
year's work. On the old reformatory
farm, which, of course, is still in
operation, me cotton crop yielded
more than a bale to the acre on an
entire average, and this is profitable
farming.
