ATLANTA, Ga—The announce
ment of the plan, which In now tak
ing definite shape, for making a
Great White Way along Peachtree
and Whitehall street*, from the Ara.
gon hotel to Mitchell street, by the In
stallation of myriad electric. designs,
haa aroused moat Intense Interest,
and the project has been pronounced
on all sides one that will add greatly
to the city's attractiveness.
The detail* of the project are
these:
Generally Peachtree and the Five
Points and the viaduct and Whitehall
street from the Aragon hotel on the
north side to the corner, of Mitchell
street and Whitehall on the south,
are to be converted into a long lane
of electric glory by night.
The illumination will be* perma
nent, through Bummer and winter
from the time tho first, lights are lit
till midnight each night that passes.
Every building along the course of
the Way (as It will come to bo called)
will be outlined with IncandeacentH—
some colored and the majority clean
white.
The windows will be framed In
lights. The corners of the building ,
the ledges across their faces, and. In
fact, every detail of tlu ir whole front,
will bn worked out with light points
The city will he asked to multiply |
the number of arcs that are now sus
pended along what will be the Way. I
The plans do not contemplate a more
profuse distribution of tho ares, but
rather their Increase on the lighting
points In use at present. Where one
are Is now swung, it is planned to
have four or live, clustered to form
one blase of Illumination.
Horizontal signs swung over side
walks will be tabooed In the elec
trical scheme, as tnharmnlous with
the clean cut beauty towards which
the promoters are aiming. Their places
will lie taken, at least by night, with
vertical signs that will he read in
•Ingle letter formation from top to
bottom, like Chinese chlrography.
By means of this sign display, ev
ery place of business will stand out
clearly and Hlnglv announced. The
sides of the street, In perspective, will
read like the Index of a card file.
Atlanta Is not original In Ibis, lint
tlie plan has never before been pre
sented here Smaller elites have their
illumlnald liusinss artrls, hut until
within Ihe Inst few days no scheme
of lighting Whitehall street and
Peachtree street or any other of the
business streets by night lias been
laid before the public of this city,
I hough for some time past this very
thing that is now clearly developed
has been in Ihe air within the limits
of a small circle nf men.
"It will encourage tho people to
com e out in the evenings. It will
give them th« correct impression that
everybody else besides themselves
has not gone to bed," snys one of
thos 0 who Is enthused over the move
ment,
Lighted store windows that will re
tain th'-ir illumination till the street
itself grows dark for the night form
another detail towards which the
White Way promoters are working.
Whitehall and Peachtree streets urn
not dark now, as things are, but not
ail of the windows along tlw-lr down
town length are ill after an early
hour of the evening. The plan is for
all to stay Hi,

DECLARED THAT CON
j VENTION MAY BE AD
JOURNED IF UNFAVOR
ABLE TO BRYAN
Continued from Page One
"When these delegates, instructed
for Bryan, begin arriving "fit Denver
the real campaign work for Gray will
! begin. Six weeks ago these men
were all for Bryan. Since then It has
I changed. The instructed men will hr:
; telling these unlnstructed why they,
should not vote for Tiryan and will
; do more good than all the campaign
i managers in the world.”
1 NOMINATION
ON THE FIRST
BALLOT DOUBTFUL.
It is contended that Bryan has ac
tually 61k instructed delegates, This
is f.f> short of enough to nominate
hJm. The Orgy-Johnson people as
serf. that, he cannot get the extra
number on tho first ballot and there
! lore he Is lost. Of course, both sides
declare that the second ballot will
land their man.
THINKS JOHNSON
STAND? NO CHANCE
OF NOMINATION.
(B'/ V G. F. PRICE.)
DKNVBv.CoI.—If the opinion of
those best qualified to form an opin
ion is worth anything. W. J. Bryan
will be named for president by the
democratic convention on Thursday
on the drst ballot.
Most of the men here thla morn
irig are leaders of sentiment In their
states, or at least, think they are;
the main body of the delegates will
begin in come in today and from now
until Monday there will he a con
tinual stream of them and then it will
be possible to forecast with some do
gree of certainty. In the meantime It
Is Bryan as surely as it was Taft at
this relative time in Chicago.
In the unlikely event that Bryan
should fall to rereive the nomina
tion, Judge Gray of Delaware seems
much more than likely to show his
strength than Johnson of Minnesota.
i here is an element of bitterness
in Ihe feeling toward Johnson on the
part of many of the Bryan men which
would seem to plaeo ills nomination
out of the question, for it, is certain
as anything In politics can be fore
casted that even If tTie Bryan men
cannot name ilielr own man, they can
prevented the nomination of any man
they don't want and at. this writing
they certally don't want Johnson.
MANY STATES WANT
VICE-PRESIDENCY
The vice presidential situation Is
mixed. There are nearly as many
vice presidential booms as there are
alales. Not all of Ihe stales have
candidates, hut some of them have
several. New York, for instance, has
at lessl si* favorite sons who are men
Honed for second place on the tick
et. They are Judge W. J. Qaynor,
Lieut. Governor Chanler. Lewis Nix
on. (Vugressman Burton Harrison,
Bird ,f. Colcr and Mayor McClellan,
and nil the New York delegation has
not arrived yet.
It is not at all improbable if New
York comeg out solid for Bryan, that
a New Yorker will get the place, un
less Judge Gray will consent to take
it.
Jnsl now, so far as surface Indi
cations go, the vice presidency is
open. As tilings develop the leaders
probably will get together on a man
next week. In the meantime the
friends of the many candidates can
enjoy themselves.
While there is a good deal of di
vergence on certain plank In the pini
form the probabilities are that these
all will be adjusted in committee,
with little probability of their being
brought before the convention.
ANTI-INJUNCTION
PLANK MAY CAUSE
HARD CONTEST.
Ah at Chicago the main fight so far
as the platform Is concerned, will he
on the anti injunction plunk Feeling
here is not nearly so high on this
question ns it was In Chlengo and It
is pretty safe to say that a satlsfne
lory compromise will be reached.
Much Interest Is being manifested
in the national chairmanship. It Is
settled that chairman Taggart will
not succeed himself. Daniel ,1. Cant
pnu, of Michigan Is the nmn most
frequently spoken of ns manager of
th<> campaign. Among others mention
ed are Mayor Tom L. Johnson of
Cleveland, Frey Woodson, of Ken
tucky, and Mayor J. C. Dahlman, of
Omaha.
Thert' are three important contests
before the national committee: The
MeCarren contest in New York: the
llghl against Roger Sullivan's men
from Chicago, and the Penna. con
test against some of OufTey's men It
Is generally understood that the New
A ork and Illinois contests will he
thrown out. hut Guffey may hnvo
trouble In holding his men.
Denver's anus are wide open and
there |s every disposition to mfiko
the country'* democrats glad they
came here.

Friday Night.
At the hoard of police commission
meeting Friday night Private Webb

duly accepted. No substitute was
elected to fill the place made vacant
by a general "move-up” along the

routine nature, unimportant, was
transacted.

The condition of the Quarters and

last report, and I wish to say that
the men are all performing their duty
well. The accident that occurred on
last Saturday night while answering
an emergency call has been thor
oughly investigated and I find it
was no negligence on the part of the
driver, but a very unfortunate ac
cident. The men that were hurt have
all been carefully looked after and
all are rapidly improving.
