MRS. BRYAN—MRS. TAFT.
A Washington exchange contains
the following concerning the probable
mistress of the White House:
Should Mrs. Taft be the fortunate
lady upon whom the halo of “first
lady” will fall, there will appear to
be little change in the social aspect
of the White House. Less rigid ob
servance of formalities will probably
be noticed, and the personnel of the
intimates will, of course, be changed.
New York will be less prominent and
Cincinnati will come right to the
front. The army will also be prom
inent in the list of the close friends
of the president and his family, owing
to the long stay of Secretary Taf
and his family in the Philippines. It
was there that a very close, warm
and last friendship sprung up be
tween Mrs. Taft and Mrs, Garlington,
Wife of General Garlington, of the
general staff of the army. Mrs. Gar
lington was the only woman besides
Mrs. Taft who was present in Secre
tary Taft’s office on that eventful
Thursday when they read the tele
grams apprising them of the doings
of the Chicago convention, and which
resulted so happily to the little party.
Mrs. Bryan, wife of the probable
democratic nominee, and who may be
come the next mistress of the White
House—it all depends upon how the
cards fall—is known in Washington
by a comparatively small circle.
Therefore, she would come almost
as a stranger to Washington society,
which so often has known it 6 lead
er well in more private life. Mrs.
Bryan is a brainy woman and she is
a woman who has won social success.
She was in Washington w-hen Mr.
Bryan served his state as a repre
sentative in congress, but she did not
at that time go in for society, as her
children were all quite young and
her duties in the nursery were con
sidered first, those in the drawing
room coming second. Mrs. Bryan has
a charmingly frank and gracious
manner, and her fine eyes reflect the
pleasure she feels in meeting people.
She, as well as Mrs. Taft, will pre
sent a daughter to society within the
next two years. One of these, either
Miss Helen Taft or Miss Grace Bryan,
both still in school, is almost sure to
make her first bow to the formal so
cial world in the White House. Miss
Taft will return to her studies at
Bryn Mawr next fall, and Miss Bryan
to hers in Rollins institute, in Vir
ginia, under any circumstances.
GAIETIES AT THE
SEA ISLAND.
BEAUFORT, S. C.—During the
past weok the social functions have
been pleasing and varied. The
month is closing in a successful
round of gaiety which argues well for
the anticipated pleasures in July.
Pleasant memories linger in tho mind
of those who have been so fortunate
as to enjoy the delightful breezes at
all times during the day and night
on the large verandas of this quaint
hotel. Great pleasures are anticipated
at Bay point, where the hotel has
tents for the accommodation of the
guests who would enjoy company out
by the sea, the now dock just com
pleted making It safe at all times to
land. The bathing pavilion in from
of the hotel is much enjoyed by the
children as well as the older folk.
The coming week promises a round
of pleasures for those who desire it
as well as rest for those who wish
rest and quiet.

themselves that the delightful ioca
tion and cool breezes as well as the

an entertainment and it was with re
gret that they departed at a late
