WASHINGTON.— Astounding dls

j light today. The police now believe
ilist her swindles in Baltimore and
Washington form but a small part of
ner work, and that the woman now
In a cell at the district jail is one of
the most remarkable women crimi
nals with whom the police of any city
In this country have ever had to deal.
From Rochester, N. Y., where she
operated extensively and took In
every one she approached, from
Ithaca, N. Y , from Ossining, and Al
Mon in the same state, and from I
Huntsville, Ala., come reports which
show that there are many people in
tho*e cities who are lamenting that
they ever succumbed to the wiles of
Miss Casparl. When the extent ot
their operations Is compared, say tho
police, Casjle Chadwick will be de
posed as the greatest woman swind
ler this country lias ever known.
The finding of about half a hun
dred Inners in a small trunk taken
from the room in which she lived,
which was the first Indication which
the police got of the great extent of
her operations, was one of the most
remarkable developments of the case.
Among them were letters from peo
ple In many cities which show that
Mis* Casparl was indebted to them,
j and that they were clamoring for
i payment.
Dr. Charles Caspar!, her brother,
went to the district Jail yesterday
afternoon and made every possible
provision for lilb sister's comfort. He
declared that he Intended to stand

ST. I’ACl* Minn.—The Minneapo

company yesterday served m Sice on
the stale railroad and warehouse com
mission that, beginning August 1. ft
would charge a passenger fare of ;!
rents a mile, thus ignoring the 2 cent
fare law. This la considered a fore
runner of similar action on the part
i of all the smaller roads of the state.
The letter of the railroad company
notifying the state commission con
tained no explanation of the \rospec
tlve advance. The road some time
ago reported to the state commission
ihHt il comd not profitably carry
freight at the rates established by
the legislature. bill added that It
would comply with the two-cent pas

mission eiempted it from reducing
freight rates.
The larger roads In the state nr*

that cf the Minneapolis. Red hake
mid Manitoba, a* they have brought
the two-rent rate into litigation.

Closely clear out to the doors.
From the store the officers pro

town for a search warrant.
Once inside, the officers found
themselves face to face with a fierce
tiger. They found a trunk that con

pints. They found a barrel packed
full of all the sealed bottles it would

Th° liquor was seized and will be

of the law to store whiskey in the

had in his house was of the same
brand he stored away in his safe,
showing, so the officers will attempt
to prove, that the house supplied the
tiger.
