BERNE, Switzerland —The deaths
of 25 Italian workmen resulted from
a frightful accident early today in
the Ixiotßchberg tunnell in the Ber
io o Alps. The men drilling inside
the tunnel unexpectedly pierced th*'|
'wall separating them from a Sub ter-j
| ranean river or lake. A torrent of .
water rushed in, filling the tunnell !
drowning all the workmen. It is be
lieved that they tapped the Kander
river, flowing through the mountains
above tin* tunnel. Water chokes the
‘ tunnel within a thousand yards of
the entrance.

AIKEN IS SEEKING
INCREASED WATER
More Abundant Supply To
Be Obtained by Flourish
ing Carolina City.
AIKKN, S. C The people of Aik
en are now worked np over the wat
er supply question. They have at
present an nbundant supply for prea
ent demands from the artesian wells,
but thei.e wells are evidently beeom-
Iny. slowly exhausted, and a more
nbundnnt nrd certainly lasting sup
ply hi essential, us the town grows.
It i- lor tin- reason that Aiken I*
seeking sources of surface supply.
Recently the board of trade ap
pointed a committee, who drove out
to the most promising locations In
'the neighborhood particularly to
Holland Springs, 8 miles distant, and
Shiloh llrnm-h, 7 miles, and exnmlned
the quantity of water, and general
surroundings Dr. Francis L. Parker.
Jr . of Charleston the noted chemist,
, accompanied the committee, and car
ried back samples of water from each
place for analysis. A day or two ago
he returned the analyses with reports
that the water from each place was
exceptionally pure, and wholesome.
And now the question of coat of
| building the works at either of Ihese
places and bringing the water to Alk
jen arises. To meet this question,
and get reliable Information, the city
council ha- ordered that some well
known h'drantlc engineer be sent
for at once to make an accurate sur
ve\ of these two points together
with some others, and to make an ac
! curate and reliable estimate of the
cost of getting water from eaeh
place. !he horse power available, and
to give all the Information that may
be needed for our water commission
ers to act upon.
When the people have this rellnble
Information they will know what they
are doing when It comes to vote for
three water works commissioners,
and for the Issue of city bonds to
wire- the expense
Aiken has to have more water; and
the people are now satisfied that
more cannot he obtained by artes
ian wells

CITY PRISONERS WILL

SAVANNAH, (la.—Th e city of Sa
vannah and Chatham county seem
! about on the eve of being put in a
I position of getting some work out of
I their prisoner* who are convicted of
I violating the ordinances of the city.
A bill Is to be Introduced In the legs
lature giving the city authorities In
connection with the county commis
sioners authority to put such prison
| ers to w-ork on the county farm. In
this way they will earn something for
the county and the city and will not
be a dead expense as they are now.
How thoroughly such a reform Is
needed will be appreciated when it Is
known that of the 197 prisoners in
the cpnnty jail on Thursday 113 were
police court prisoners who cannot
now be made to do a lick of work.
