QUEBEC. —The three hundredth
anniversary celebration of Quebec
closed yesterday in a blaz" of glory
and early this morning the Prince
of Wales sailed away for England.
The prince boarded the English war
ship Indomitable which had brought
him to North America last night, and
at 4 o'clock a. m. today the ship
weighed anchor and stood off for the
open sea bearing the. prince and the
royal party.
Vice President Fairbanks Is en route
for the west. Before departing he ex
pressed hi* pleasure at the sumptu
ous entertainment and the historic
importance of the celebration.

residences. The crew of the Brit
Ish cruiser Vatrae performed gallant
services in aiding the injured and in

Board of Health Commit
tee Reports Adversely on
Measure Advocated by
Archibald Blackshear in
Council.
The Board of Health met Tuesday
night in regular monthly session.
A committee appointed to investi
gate an ordinance recently- introduced
in council by Archibald Blackshear,)
Esq., providing for the creation of an j
office to be known as that of District |
Nurse, and a revision of the system i
of city physicians, reported unfavor
ably on the proposed enactment.
They wt re unanimous in their decis
ion, and their action in the matter
meets with the approval of the Board
or Health.
The attention of the Board was
called to the importance of requiring
a report from every physician in the
city on all cases of tuberculosis, ty
phoid fever or other contagious dis-i
ease coming under their immediate
notice, and after considerable dis
cussion it was further recommended
that the Board investigate the sur
roundings. so that, if necessary, all
cases endangering the health of any
neighborhood be removed to the City
hospital for treatment. The law rc-
quirtng u report of contagious dis
eases is one of long standing, but will
in future be more rigidly enforced.
WANTS MORE MONEY
FOR SCAVENGERS.
Owing to the fact that many com
plaints have been filed at the Hoard
of Health offices in recent weeks, al
leging imperfect scavenger service in
certain localities, the Hoard "ill at
next meeting of council- petition for
an additional appropriation, with
which to more thoroughly equip tills
department. Snpt. Harry Beaver finds
It necessary during the summer
months to do just twice as much work
with practically the same equipment,
and In the columns of The Herald of
recent date was published his urgent
lequest for co-operation by the citi
zens in every section of the city.

WASHINGTON.—The Central Paci
fic railroad closed its business rela
tions with the government Tuesday
when its check for $2,940,000, the
las; payment under the funding act
of 1889, was accepted by the treasury
department.
The cheek was for the payment due
February 1, 1909. but the returning
wave of prosperity enabled the Cen
tral Pacific Railroad company to avail
itself of the advantage of paying in
advance, and hence the arrival of tha
$2,940,000 check. This closes the
account between ,tbe railroad and l’n
cle Sam.
