GILL COMMISSION
MEETING
Mayor Says Few Minor
Points Considered and
Left in His Hands For
Investigation.
The entire city hall commission,
composed ol Mayor Dunbar and I
Messrs. Charles Estes, F. B. Pope, J. i
T. Bothwell, E. B. Kalbflelsch, A j
J. Twites, and W. B. Bush, met this j
mornlUK. but their deliberations were
not mude public. A meeting was
scheduled to pike place yesterday af
ternoon buClt was delayed until this
morning. Th- session was an execu
tlve one and no one except those
named and Clerk o! Connell William
Lyon Martin were admitted.
Mayor Dunbar stated after the meet
ing that there was nothing to be
said concerning the meeting and that
a few miner points had been left In
i his hands for proper investigation so
i that all matters could be presented to
council at the regular meeting M<»-
I day night. Individual members of
'the committee refused to divulge their
| views on the situation for publica
tion, but It seems practically certain
i that the city hall will be built as
j planned and that no more bids wll!
j fie necessary as Is rumored around
I tbe town.
It will probably take some time for
j the city council to thoroughly go over
the matter Monday night, but there
1 Is little doubt but that the business
: will be definitely settled at that time
and construction will start as soon
las possible

Nothing Remains Except
For the House and Senate
To Get Together. Investi
gating Committee Con
tinues To Bring Out Sen
„ sations.
ATLANTA, Ga.—With the passage
by the house yesterday ot the A 1 ex-:
ander bill which wipes out the con
vict lease system by constitutional
amendment, legislation on the ques
tion for the present week at least has
been settled. Next week the matter
will come up in the senate, the Felder
hill having been made a special or
der for next Tuesday.
Nothing now remains to be done
except for the house and senate to
get together on the big question. Both
the house bill and the senate bill have
their opponents in both branches of
the general assembly, that is to say,
what the senate wants is not the
thing that the house favors, as the
house has already passed its own
bill. Still, the big question is nearing
a solution and by the last of next
week it will be known just what leg
islation will be passed.
The investigation committee, which
is bringing out sensations from time
to time, in connection with the convict
lease, continues its labors. Just, when
the committee will finish remains to
be seen. If one maj; judge by the
testimony from day to day, the com
mittee has found lots that is ‘ rotten
in Denmark.” That they will find
more rottenness as they proceed
seems certain.
Apparently, the committee wants to
hear all that is to be said on the sub
ject, after which they will make up
their minds what they will do. Wheth
er they will impeach members of the
prison commission, sue for alleged ill
gotten gains among some of the of
ficials or what not Is as yet only a
matter of conjecture. Most people,
for the present at least, will read the
reports of the testimony and form
their own conclusions. Leading speak
ers will express their views on the
convict system at a mass meeting to
be held next Sunday at the Grand
opera house.

RESERVEDDECISIOI
Temporary Injunction Re
straining Raise in Freight
Rates Stands Until De
cision is Made.
ATLANTA, Ga.—After two days'
hearing the big rate case was con
cluded yesterday by Jifdge Speer at
Mt. Airy. The Judge reserved his de
cision and the temporary injunction
against the railroads remains effec
tive, preventing a raise in rates as
scheduled on August 1.
As is known the hearing has been
on an injunction to prevent the rail
roads from raising their rates on
grain and food products from the west
to Georgia. A decision in the case,
which is expected during the next
few days, will be of gerat interest.
GEORGIA WILL PAY •
A LARGE SUM FOR
NEAR BEER TAX
License By the Fedex-al
Government Will Ap
proximate a Hundred
Thousand Dollars.
ATLANTA, Ga.—The licenses de
rived by the federal revenue depart
ment of Georgia during the coming
year from near-beers will probably
total 100,000.
There are approximately 3,000 near
beer saloons in the state. Each of
these is taxed about S2O by the gov
ernment. In the neighborhood of 3,-
000 licenses have been issued by the
revenue department for the present
fiscal year, which began July 1.
The records in the internal, reve
nue collector’s office show that the
federal returns from near-beers fi>-
the year should approximate $100.0t»0.
Already in the neighborhood of 3,000
licenses have been granted. These
licenses are for wholesale liquor deal
ers, wholesale malt liquor dealers, re
tail liquor dealers and retail malt
liquor dealers.
The government fiscal year ending
June 30 and the matter of renewing
all fiscal licenses under its control
was begun by the revenue department.
. jiroughout July there has been a rush
rush in the renewal of licenses. In
this connection there remains little
ther to be done.
There are sonie who have been slow
about the renewal of licenses, but
such cases will be placed in the hands
of the revenue agent, and fines and
prosecutions will result it the offend
ers delay in the matter of renewal
persists.
