RI'BBELLVILL£, Ky.—The bodies
Of four negro' swung fjoin the limb
of "Old flanging Tree" when Ihe sun
rose this morning. They had been
taken from the Logan county Jail dur
ing the night and lynched by a mob
of fifty nun.
The victims are; Virgil Jones,
Tom Jones, Jtobert Jones, and Joe
Riley.
The cause of the lynching was the
murder of Jami. Cunningham, «■
white farmer living near AllensvtUe,
Ky., In Todd county, by Rufus llrow
der, colored, a week ago. Browder
ambushed Cunningham because he
had he-n discharged.
Browder is in Jail in Louisville for
safe keeping. The negroes who were
lynched belonged to a lodge which
had paasrd resolutions endorsing the
murder of Cunningham.
For tills the four were arrested on
charges of conspiracy.
Last eight a mob quietly entered
Russellville, went to the home of
Jailer Butt, covered him with guns,
secured the prisoners and Hanged
them so quickly that the (own did not
know of it until this morning. Not
a shot was tired Two of the negroes
were In night clothes. I’lnned to one
was the following note: "Let this

ARRESTED AFTER A
TWO YEARS’ CHASE
Frank Engle, Alias John
Summers, Charged With
Murder, is Arrested after
Chase Across Two Con
tinents.
PITTSBURG, Pa.—After a chase of
almost two years, from tue middle
west of the United States, through
Pittsburg to the Atlantic coast, then
through licit ions of Europe and back
again, Frank Engle, alias John Sum
mers, aged 24, was arrested last night
at 1213 Liberty avenue by Special
Officers Beebe and Freeborn. He Is
charged with the murder cf Frank i
Z'-ller, of Milwaukee, on Christmas
day, 1900. With him at the same
time was Clarissa Zeller, aged 25,
wife of the dead man. She was also
taken Into custody.
Following the killing of Zeller, to
which Engle Is said to have confessed
to Inspector Demell, at the South
Side police station last night., and -
which occurred when Zeller surprised |
his wife and Engle In his home, the j
body was carried upstairs by Ihe man
and woman, where It was hidden be j
tweon partitions in the wall, and the .
deed was not discovered for some
days. When the police did go to work j
Engle and Mrs. Zeller were missing.
I hey were traced to Pittsburg, but
eluded the police and were next heard
of in Germany and from there follow
ed from plac e to place until located
In this city. When arrested Engle |
said;
"Wd thought that things had all
blown over and that we were safe or
we would never have come back.” I

TRACK GAMBLERS

NEW YORK—Acting District At
torney Elder today went to Saranac
Lake to confer with Governor Hughes
concerning u vigorous prosecution of
the Indictments returned by the Kings
county grand Jury, charging the
Brighton Beach Racing association,
William A. Engenian. chief stockhold
er; Christopher J. Fitzgerald, presi
dent. and John G. Cavanaugh, with
"conducting a gambling house" at the
Brighton track.
He will report to Governor Hughes
tn detail what he hus done to stop
belting In Kings county, and tell him
wliat he intends dolug along that line
from now on. and II may he said the
conference will have for Its purpose
the absolute alaiiltlon of racing In the
state.
The cases will be taken to trial at
once, and if convictions are obtained
Mr Elder will immediately nail up
the race track gates, following the po
lice rule In taking rare of disorderly
places.

The man Is hemmed In by a posse
of farmers headed by the father of
the girl. It Is feared violence may
