BEER K JOYFUL
'DEFEAT OF WISE BILL RY
SENATE IS PLEASING
TO MANY
PROHIBITION LAW A JOKE
Such is the Sentiment of
the Extreme Prohibi
tionist. Big Liquor
Shipment
ATLANTA, Ga. -The sale of sub
stitute beer, or near beer, aa it Is gen
erally called, may be continued, so far
ns the state of Georgia is concerned,
without the payment of any tax.
This follows as the result of the fail
ure of the senate to pass the Wist;
hill.
The vote 1n the senate was exactly
three to one In favor of the tax, yet
the vote was two short of a consti
tutional majority and the bill was kill
ed. Twenty-three favorable votes
would have passed It. The hill re
cejved only twenty-one. Seven sen
ators opposed the tax levy.
The Wise bill provided for a tax of
1200 per annum upon near beer sa
loons and a tax of *3OO per annum
upon the manufacturers of near beer.
The news from the senate was
pleasing to the near beer dealers of
Atlanta', of which there are quite a
large number; In fact, the near beer
stands with their one-cent lunch
counters are to be found in almost
every block of the city. It is claimed
by j. R Richards, assistant super
intendent of the Anti-Saloon League
that the-prohlbltion law is being open
ly violated by many of the near beer
dealers, and furthermore that whiskey
and real brer is being shipped into '
Atlanta every week by the jarload; in
fact, he says the shipments of booze
are extremely heavy, and he would
like to have it stopped. It Is claimed
by some of the prohibition advocates
that the prohibition law will he "a
Joke before some of the antis get
through with it.’’

Richmond County's Assessable Values
Show an Increase of Over $141,000
The Richmond county tax digest was completed yesterday after
noon and despite the fact that a sb-called financial stringency has made
itself .manifest the wealth of the county is greater by $141,195( than it
was a year ago. The increase is quite satisfactory to the officials and
was somewhat more than many thought It could possibly be as a great
amount of talk was znade concerning the probable reduction in values 01
real estate, to say nothing of the loss of stock, when die liquor busi
ness was driven out of the city by state prohibition. *-
But Augusta has more than held Us own against any. odd and tile
wealth of this section is increasing daily, so to speak. In addition to the
property listed with the receiver of tax returns all franchise rights are
turned in direct to the state comptroller general, and, of course, this
amounts to quite a good deal in Richmond county.
The following shows the comparative figures in the tax returns for
this year, as compared witn 1907:
1908. 1907.
Country Real Estate $ 3,686,078 $ 3,610,328

Jackson’s place is situated at Cen
te:i* and Reynolds streets, was raided
Wednesday night by Deputy Marshal
Murray. Beer was found but no
whiskey.
Chief Norris said Jackson would
probably be re-arrested for violation
of the prohibition law, if it was estab
lished that he was selling high-proof
beer, Instead of prohi beer.
NEGRO HAD BUNDLE
HE COULD NOT EXPLAIN
Near Mclntosh and Fenwich streets i
this morning Patrolman C. B. Johnson j
met a negro with a "great big sack
on his back." The bundle appeared
rather suspicious, and Johnson made
the negro open it up. He found a
set of buggy harness, lines and collar
excepted, tor the possession of which
Robert Hampton could give no very
satisfactory account, and the police
man sent to headquarters.
He will be held until the harness
are identified, at which time the au
thorities expect to establish against
Hampton a case of larceny, either
from the house of after trust.
