The Chicago grain market contin ues to climb higher There Is evi dently no depression in the west. Local cotton mills figured again In t be transaction of today on Cotton Row and sales were heavier than for some time. New cotton in Augusta is quoted today at 9 1-2 cent*. This is a price just, four cents under the figures that buyers paid a year ago. Somebody wiil soon want to know where the bottom can be found. Reports from New York early this morning were to the effort that south ern traders were heavy sellers. Many cotton factors in touch with the real situation here aver that they will be heavy losers a little In the season, Mr W M. Bush, of the R. C. Neely Company, Is over In Alabama today looking at the situation there, Mr. .1 K. Luke, of Luke and Flem ing. Is In South Carolina today Inves tigating the probabilities in cotton. Augusta Is getting its share of rain nowadays, but the farming territory around the city Is yet practically without any relief. LIVE STOCK* MARKET. In the first ten minutes of trading between 25,000 end 311,000 kales were dumped on the market. October, which closed hi 9.20 last night, ope ed at 9.15, and broke to 8.81, show ing a loss of $1,90 a bale It then rallied to 8.89, but immediately broke again to 8.81. On *he floor of the cotton exchange the story commonly circulated was that .Joseph A. Batten, a great wheat speculator of Chicago, and L've.mo’e, were the sellers. Dining the excitement atiei ding 'he raid brokers declared three days ago Livermore wins long 300,000 hales, I which cost him an average of 9.40 If this story Is true today's break I represent* a loss to him of nearly i $3.00 a bale, or $900,000, At the office of K F. Holton k Co., where Livermore makes his head quarter*, there was the usual dis inclination to make any statement I about the young operator. Ilarrimnn is said to be shifting his speculative line from the Hill-Morgan stocks into Southern Ba cifie and Union Pacific. The Copper metal situation Is at tracting careful attention once more. 3he situation in that direction Is so highly speculative that no one would be surprised to see a sharp break tn the metal stocks, especially in those cannot produce metal under 1,- 200 pounds.
